About This Opportunity

The Tom Austen Brown Research Supplementary Scholarship provides financial assistance to support recipients of the Tom Austen Brown Postgraduate Research Scholarship in Archaeology. This supplementary scholarship offers up to $12,000 per annum in stipend allowance to help students who identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people or who demonstrate economic/financial hardship or disadvantage. The scholarship is available to students enrolled full-time in a master's by research or PhD in Archaeology at the School of Humanities, University of Sydney. Recipients can receive funding for up to 1.75 years for a master's by research or up to 3.5 years for a PhD, subject to satisfactory academic performance. No extension is possible beyond these durations. Funded by the Tom Austen Brown Bequest, this scholarship aims to provide crucial financial support to First Nations students or students experiencing economic difficulties while they pursue advanced research in archaeology. The scholarship is awarded based on demonstrated economic and/or financial hardship, with selection made by a committee comprising the Archaeology Chair and members of the supervision team. Applicants do not need to submit a separate application for this supplementary scholarship. They are automatically considered when they apply for the Tom Austen Brown Postgraduate Research Scholarship in Archaeology, provided they meet the eligibility criteria of being Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander or demonstrating financial hardship.
