About this opportunity
The UACES PhD Fieldwork Scholarships provide funding to support PhD researchers conducting essential fieldwork on contemporary European Studies. Since 2002, these scholarships have supported hundreds of postgraduate researchers worldwide. Four annual scholarships of £1,500 each are awarded to help cover legitimate fieldwork expenses such as international or domestic flights, accommodation, visa fees, research materials, archive access fees, transportation to research sites, interview transcription services, and data collection tools. Recipients receive £1,000 upfront in January to book necessary arrangements and conduct fieldwork throughout the year, then submit a blog post about their research along with receipts to receive the final £500 payment upon completion.
One scholarship is specifically reserved for researchers from ethnic minority or traditionally underrepresented backgrounds, those enrolled at universities in Africa, Asia, Caribbean, Central America, or South America, or those studying in non-traditional disciplines such as anthropology, cultural studies, or philosophy. The program actively encourages applications from diverse backgrounds across all four scholarships. This flexible and supportive funding opportunity enables doctoral students to conduct in-person research that transforms their PhD research from theoretical to groundbreaking, particularly benefiting self-funded students who may otherwise lack resources for essential fieldwork.
