The selection is based on academic standing and demonstrated excellence in senior-level Russian coursework through achieving the highest average in the course. The award was established through endowed funds by the late Helen Tkachenko of Edmonton in memory of her parents, Ulean and Eudoxia Kushnirevs'ka-Tkachenko.
