About This Opportunity

The Swedish Writers' Union offers residency grants at Ariane Wahlgren's house in Athens, Greece. The property was bequeathed to the Writers' Union by author and journalist Ariane Wahlgren in 1993. Located near the Filopappos Hill in the Makrigianni area with views of the Acropolis, the house provides a unique opportunity for Swedish writers and translators to work and create in Athens. The union annually awards 26 two-week residency grants for the main building and 8 two-week grants for the terrace apartment. Grant recipients receive free accommodation plus a travel grant of 4,000 SEK. An additional travel grant of 2,000 SEK is available for those who choose to travel by train to Athens, paid after the trip upon presentation of receipts. The main building features shared facilities including kitchen, library, living room with dining table and TV, shower, toilet, and washing machine. The house has internet access (wi-fi) and a printer, but no computer. The terrace apartment is 29 square meters with bedroom, living room, fully equipped kitchen, and bathroom with shower and toilet. Residents of the terrace apartment may bring one guest (age 11+) who pays a separate accommodation fee. Grants are awarded based on membership years and previous grant history, with no specific requirements for quality or quantity of written work. Applications are accepted during designated periods, with the next application period being January 13-27, 2026.
