The Norwegian Environment Agency (Miljødirektoratet) provides a subsidy of 1,000 Norwegian kroner for the proper disposal of scrapped recreational boats through their boat wreck deposit program. This initiative aims to prevent environmental damage from discarded boats, which often contain hazardous materials like bottom paint in hulls and composite materials that break down into microplastics in the ocean. Eligible boats include recreational vessels up to 15 meters in length, as well as smaller craft like sailboards, canoes, rubber boats with hulls, and kayaks. The program accepts applications year-round, though submissions must be made between January 1 and December 1. Applicants must deliver their boat to an approved waste facility, obtain a signed confirmation form from the facility, and then submit an electronic application through the online portal with the confirmation attached. Payment is typically received within one to two months of application approval.
