About This Opportunity

The WIN-Velocity Scholarship supports domestic research-based graduate students in their first year of graduate studies at the University of Waterloo. The scholarship has a value equivalent to a Graduate Research Studentship (GRS) for two years and has been made possible through a financial contribution from the Waterloo Institute for Nanotechnology (WIN). Eligible students must pursue commercialization and entrepreneurship activities for establishing a start-up company at UW with Velocity support, based on a business idea in 'deep-tech' which matches research conducted by the WIN supervisor. Students participating in the program will receive mentorship and advice for start-up and entrepreneurial activities from Velocity. Recipients are expected to focus on their academic and start-up/entrepreneurship activities for the duration of the WIN-Velocity Fellowship program. The student is required to receive co-curricular mentoring through the Velocity Translation Program which includes support for successful spinout from the university. Selection is based both on academic credentials as well as on market potential of the student's business idea. A joint committee consisting of individuals from WIN and Velocity will receive and evaluate applications three times per year, and following an in-person or virtual interview, awardees for each term will be selected by the evaluation committee.
