About this opportunity
The University of St Andrews offers a full scholarship funded by St Leonard's Postgraduate College to support an exceptional student undertaking doctoral research on 'Designing Techno-Cultural Ecologies: Prototyping Critical and Creative Interactions with Biodiversity.' This interdisciplinary PhD project investigates how digital technologies can be reconfigured to explore new frameworks for engaging with biodiversity, integrating environmental humanities, design research, and digital fabrication to prototype new forms of technological engagement. The research centres on the herbarium at the St Andrews Botanic Garden, aiming to reactivate it as a 'techno-cultural ecology' where biological archives, digital systems, and human perception intersect to produce new forms of understanding. The scholarship provides full tuition fee coverage and an annual stipend (£19,775 for 2025-2026) for up to 3.5 years full-time or 7 years part-time. Doctoral students at St Andrews benefit from being part of a vibrant postgraduate community at one of the world's leading research-intensive universities, with access to comprehensive training through the GRADskills programme and support from St Leonard's Postgraduate College and the University's Careers Centre.
