Funding Opportunities

MD Fellowships

The Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds (BIF) awards MD fellowships of up to 18 months to outstanding medical students to pursue ambitious, experimental projects in basic biomedical research worldwide. Fellowship holders must study human medicine in Germany and change cities and institutions for at least ten consecutive months to work in an internationally renowned laboratory. On top of the monthly stipend, the program offers fellows seminars, travel allowances, individual and personal support, and a worldwide network of fellows and alumni. These fellowships enable students of human medicine to perform excellent basic research and thus build bridges between basic research and the clinic.

Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds PhD Fellowships

The Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds (BIF) awards PhD fellowships of 2 to 3.5 years to outstanding junior scientists worldwide who wish to pursue an ambitious PhD project in basic biomedical research in an internationally leading laboratory. The peer-review selection process evaluates the applicant's achievements, as well as the scientific quality of the project and host laboratory. The process is highly competitive, with less than 10% of applicants receiving a fellowship. On top of the monthly stipend, the BIF offers its fellows seminars, travel allowances, individual and personal support, and a worldwide network of fellows and alumni. BIF's fellowships have the reputation of being a certificate of excellence due to the stringent selection process and the success of the fellows and their projects. Since its start in 1983, the BIF has fostered a network of curious, ambitious, and open-minded people built on helpfulness and trust. About 90% of fellows stay in touch with the network. The more than 1,800 fellows and alumni pursue diverse career paths in industry, biotech, patent law, consulting, entrepreneurship, and academia, including about 385 professors or principal investigators.

The BIF supports them if they conduct experimental projects in basic biomedical research and want to pursue short-term research stays or attend practical courses relevant to their projects in Europe or overseas. The program aims to foster biomedical research by enabling junior scientists from all over the world to learn new methods in practical courses or laboratories. This funding opportunity provides financial support for researchers to gain valuable experience in first-class research groups and expand their scientific expertise through international collaboration and training.
