About

The Center on Democracy, Development and the Rule of Law (CDDRL) at Stanford University is an interdisciplinary center for research on development in all of its dimensions: political, economic, social, and legal. The center seeks to understand how countries can overcome poverty, instability, and abusive rule to become prosperous, just, democratic, and well-governed societies. CDDRL bridges the worlds of scholarship and practice to foster conditions for effective representative governance, promote balanced and sustainable economic growth, and establish the rule of law. The center also analyzes threats to democracy from authoritarian resurgence, technology, populism, and globalization.

CDDRL Pre-doctoral and Postdoctoral Fellowships

CDDRL welcomes applications from pre-doctoral students at the write-up stage and from post-doctoral scholars working in any of the four program areas of democracy, development, evaluating the efficacy of democracy promotion, and rule of law. CDDRL pre-/postdoctoral fellowships are for 9 months (September-June). The program offers 2-4 fully funded residential fellowships each academic year. These fellowships are intended to support writing and research while in residence at Stanford. Fellows spend the academic year at Stanford University completing their projects, participating in seminars, and interacting with each other and the resident faculty and research staff. Pre-doctoral fellows receive stipends comparable to those awarded by the Stanford Graduate Fellowships program; the Center also pays non-matriculated student tuition for pre-doctoral fellows as required by Stanford University. Post-doctoral fellows receive stipends/salaries commensurate with experience and with consideration given to university-established minimums for a term period of 9 months. Healthcare and other benefits are also provided as required by Stanford University for both pre- and post-doctoral fellows. Fellows are expected to be fully present and engaged at CDDRL during their assignment, complete an Individual Development Plan, meet with faculty mentors monthly, attend weekly research seminars, make tangible progress on research projects, write a short op-ed or media piece, and submit a CDDRL working paper by the end of their fellowship.
