About this opportunity
The Britannia Award is an annual recognition of outstanding voluntary contributions to Roman archaeology in Britain, presented by the Archaeology Committee of the Society for the Promotion of Roman Studies. Launched in 2023 for individuals, the award expanded in 2024 to also recognize voluntary archaeological groups. The award celebrates remarkable work by volunteers and avocational archaeologists who have made exceptional contributions to Roman archaeology in Britain without professional compensation.
The prize honors various forms of volunteer service including participation in archaeological fieldwork, museum volunteering, public engagement and outreach, research contributions, finds work, digitization of archaeological data, and support for archaeological organizations. Nominations require two letters of support, one from inside the archaeological profession, each limited to 500 words detailing the nature and value of the nominee's contributions.
Successful individual nominees and a representative from winning groups are presented with the award at a Roman Society event, typically the Roman Britain day conference. Winners receive free attendance at that event, a year's free membership to The Roman Society, and their names are published in Epistula, the Society's newsletter.
