About this opportunity
The Canada Graduate Research Scholarship-Master's (CGS M) program is designed to help develop research skills and assist in the training of highly qualified personnel by supporting students who demonstrate a high standard of achievement in undergraduate and early graduate studies. The program is offered through three Canadian federal research funding agencies: CIHR (Canadian Institutes of Health Research), NSERC (Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council), or SSHRC (Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council). The scholarship provides $27,000 plus a bonus one-time lump sum payment from FGSR valued at $3,000, for a total value of $30,000. Students can only apply to one Tri-Council agency and must hold the scholarship at the awarding university, as the awards are not portable between institutions.
The program includes special initiatives to support diversity and inclusion in research. The Indigenous Scholars Awards and Supplements Initiative provides a $5,000 supplement to qualifying Indigenous CGS-M award holders, and offers a $27,000 award plus a $5,000 supplement to qualifying Indigenous candidates on the waitlist. Additionally, Black students who self-identify and provide consent may be eligible for designated funding through a limited number of additional CGS M awards reserved by each agency. These initiatives demonstrate the program's commitment to supporting underrepresented groups in graduate research and building a more diverse research community across Canada.
