About this opportunity
The Danny and Kathleen Gilbert Indigenous Scholarship in Law is offered at Western Sydney University to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students pursuing legal education. Named in honor of Danny Gilbert AM, Managing Partner and co-founder of Gilbert + Tobin, one of Australia's most successful corporate law firms, this scholarship reflects his over 30 years of commitment to commercial law and social justice issues, particularly for indigenous peoples. Since the mid-1970s, Danny has been extensively involved with community legal centres and public organisations, and in 1992 established Gilbert + Tobin Pro Bono practice with a strong emphasis on indigenous issues. In 2005, he was honored with the Order of Australia (AM) for his services to the law and the community, particularly Australia's indigenous people. The scholarship provides approximately $10,000 in total funding to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students enrolled full-time in the Bachelor of Laws program at Western Sydney University. Applicants must provide a statement explaining how the scholarship will assist them with their studies and future career, giving sufficient detail about their background and current circumstances to enable the University to assess their eligibility, need and merit.
