About This Opportunity

The Don Roddy Memorial Scholarship Fund of The Pittsburgh Foundation was created by Robin Acton Roddy in memory of her beloved husband, Don Roddy, an educator, coach and avid sports enthusiast who was 50 years old when he died of colon cancer on April 16, 2002. Roddy taught physical education for 28 years at Waynesburg Central High School in Greene County. He was a football coach for 25 years, including four years as head coach at Waynesburg, 13 years as an assistant coach at Bethlehem Center High School in Washington County, and for shorter periods at Uniontown High School, Geibel Catholic High School and Albert Gallatin High School, all in Fayette County. He was an avid golfer and member of various area golf leagues. More than anything, Roddy is remembered by his family and friends for his loving heart, kind soul and positive attitude. This scholarship is awarded annually to graduating seniors at Waynesburg Central High School in Greene County, Pennsylvania who exemplify the same qualities that Don Roddy demonstrated throughout his life. The scholarship recognizes students who continually exhibit kind behavior toward everyone—helpful, positive, inclusive, team players who put others above themselves. Recipients must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 and plan to attend a 2- or 4-year college or university. The average award ranges from $1,500 to $2,000 and is a single-year award. This scholarship honors the memory of an educator and coach who dedicated his life to teaching and mentoring young people, and seeks to support students who embody his values of kindness, positivity, and service to others.
