About this opportunity
The Freda Ahenakew and Jean Okimāsis nēhiyawēwin Scholarship is a donor-funded scholarship established by Dr. Arok Wolvengrey to support students studying the Cree language at First Nations University of Canada. This scholarship recognizes the importance of Indigenous language preservation and education. Two scholarships are awarded annually, valued at $500 each, with application deadlines of February 28th and October 31st. The scholarship is designed to support students enrolled in FNUniv Arts or Indigenous Education programs with a Major, Minor, or Certificate in the Cree language. One scholarship is specifically designated for students of Indigenous ancestry, while the second is open to all eligible applicants regardless of heritage. Applicants must demonstrate academic achievement with a minimum 65% average and have completed at least 30 credit hours. Recipients are selected based on their academic transcripts, reference letters, and a cover letter that exemplifies the importance of the Cree language to their lives, studies, and future plans.
