About This Opportunity

The Knowledge Orders before Modernity (KOM) programme is an innovative partnership between King's College London and the Centre for Medieval and Early Modern Studies at the University of Kent in Canterbury. Through the generosity of the Leverhulme Trust and match-funding from the partner universities, the programme offers doctoral scholarships for research in medieval and early modern studies across disciplines including history, classics, languages, and literature. The programme funds three cohorts of doctoral scholars, starting in autumn 2024, 2025, and 2026. Each scholar will be based at one of the two partner institutions but will be able to draw on expertise from across the partnership. The scholarships support research projects that sit within one or more of four broad themes related to knowledge orders before modernity. Over the lifetime of the programme, Knowledge Orders offers up to fifteen Leverhulme doctoral scholarships (three of which can be awarded to international students), up to three King's doctoral scholarships, up to two Kent doctoral scholarships, and up to three Leverhulme Master's Plus Doctoral scholarships designed to promote inclusion. King's will also upgrade up to three Leverhulme doctoral scholarships to make them available to international students. Each doctoral scholarship covers 3.5 years of full-time study and includes maintenance at UKRI base levels, tuition fees at UKRI base levels, and £10,000 to support the individual student's research and training needs.
