About this opportunity
The Netukulimk (Way of Life) Indigenous Student Awards support Indigenous students at the University of Prince Edward Island. One award is granted to an undergraduate Indigenous student entering full-time study at UPEI in any faculty who is in the greatest financial need. Another award is granted to an undergraduate Indigenous student returning to full-time study at UPEI in any faculty who is in the greatest financial need. The award name "Netukulimk" is a complex cultural concept that encompasses Mi'kmaq sovereign law ways and guides individual and collective beliefs and behaviours in resource protection, procurement, and management to ensure and honour sustainability and prosperity for the ancestor, present and future generations. This award was named by Mi'kmaq Elder Judy Clark and is funded by Dr. Marti Hopson, a small animal veterinarian at the Atlantic Veterinary College (AVC) who has been with UPEI for 20 years. Dr. Hopson is one of the coordinators of the Chinook Project which provides essential veterinary care to remote communities in Canada's north. She recognizes the importance of bringing Indigenous knowledge and ways of doing to the forefront of all communities including the university, and has established these awards in that spirit.
