About This Opportunity

The Sasakawa Fellowship Fund for Japanese Language Education (SFFJLE) Postgraduate Scholarship supports postgraduate research students studying Japanese language education and related topics at any tertiary institution in New Zealand. The scholarship was established in March 1995 by an endowment from the Nippon Foundation to Massey University with the purpose of fostering Japanese language education in New Zealand through the training of Japanese language teachers and the provision of fellowships to students pursuing Japanese-related studies. The scholarship provides $15,000 for master's research students for one year or $25,000 for doctoral students for three years. Recipients must be New Zealand citizens or permanent residents enrolled full-time in a research degree focusing on Japanese studies, preferably a topic related to Japanese language or its teaching. The scholarship is part of a global network of similar endowments by the Nippon Foundation across eleven institutions in six countries. SFFFLE Fellows are encouraged to participate in the NF-JLEP Support Programmes, including the NF-JLEP Visit Japan Program for Primary and Secondary School Teachers and the Research Grant which enable young researchers to conduct language- and education-related research for up to a year at a Japanese institution of higher learning. Selection is based on academic achievements, referee letters, and the proposed research topic.
