About this opportunity
The Dr Jim Doran Prize in Emergency Medicine was established in 2012/2013 to perpetuate the memory of Dr James (Jim) Doran, who was born in Cork in 1925 and made outstanding contributions to pre-hospital Emergency Medicine. Dr Doran worked as a GP in Carrigtwohill, East Cork, where he developed a life-long commitment to Emergency Medicine and ran his own Ambulance Service. The Department of Emergency Medicine, Cork University Hospital, in conjunction with the Doran family, established this prize to recognize his pioneering work.
The prize is awarded to students in the Fourth Year or GEM3 Year of the Medical Programme at University College Cork through a competitive written selection process. The top five applications are invited to make a 5-minute oral presentation to a judging panel consisting of Professor Conor Deasy (Professor of Emergency Medicine), Professor Adrian Murphy (Consultant in Emergency Medicine), and Dr. Hugh Doran. The prize offers a unique opportunity to gain experience in helicopter emergency medicine.
The prize consists of a one-month elective with London Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS), to be taken during the summer preceding the Final Medical year, plus a monetary award to help cover flights and accommodation costs in London. The prize is sponsored by London Air Ambulance and the Department of Emergency Medicine, Cork University Hospital. Note: The Dr Jim Doran Prize in Emergency Medicine will not be awarded in 2025.
