About This Opportunity

The W A Hill Civil Engineering Travel Fund was established in 2007 by the family of William Allan Hill to commemorate his significant contribution to engineering. William Allan Hill graduated from Queen's University in 1925 with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering and in 1934 with an MSc. His distinguished career as a Civil Engineer spanned over four decades, beginning with the London Midland & Scottish Railway in Belfast and London, continuing with the Belfast & County Down Railway and the Ulster Transport Authority before his retirement in 1968. He maintained his passion for all aspects of civil engineering until his death in 2007 at the age of 102. The fund provides bursaries to facilitate travel and/or attendance at conferences in the field of structural engineering, with a preference given to bridge engineering. The scope of support is broad, encompassing not only traditional conference attendance but also visits to gain technical experience and registration fees for virtual or online conferences. Bursaries of up to £1,000 are available to support these activities. The fund is open to anyone in civil engineering including undergraduate students, postgraduate taught students, postgraduate research students, and staff members at Queen's University Belfast. Recipients are required to submit a short summary of approximately 500 words describing how the bursary was used within three calendar months of return from travel. A recipient should not receive more than one bursary in any three-year period.
