PEI Home Economics Association "Doris M. Anderson Senior" Award

University of Prince Edward Island

This award is granted annually to a UPEI student who completed secondary education at a Prince Edward Island high school and is entering the fourth year of study in the Applied Human Sciences at UPEI with a focus on Family and/or Nutritional Sciences. Candidates must have maintained an academic average of 80% or greater in their previous year of study, demonstrated a positive attitude toward the profession of family and/or nutritional sciences, and have a record of participating in non-academic activities on campus or in the community. The award honors Doris M. Anderson, who had an extraordinary life and immense impact in the field of home economics. Born in St. Peter's in 1922, Doris received her Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics from Acadia University in 1944 and later earned a Master of Science in Nutrition from Cornell University. She served as the first Supervisor of Home Economics in the PEI Department of Education and was a professor at Prince of Wales College and UPEI from 1966 to 1988. Her expertise on celiac disease proved invaluable to families in the Maritimes, and she was awarded the 1967 Centennial Medal for outstanding service to the nation. Doris became a Member of the Order of Canada in 1982 and was appointed to the Senate of Canada in 1995. The PEI Home Economics Association established this award at UPEI in honor of Doris M. Anderson and her many accomplishments.
