Stan and Helen Buell Music Award

University of Prince Edward Island

The Stan and Helen Buell Music Award is granted each year to a returning student in UPEI's Music program who attended their full secondary education at a Prince Edward Island High School, has a focus on instrumental training, and is in financial need. This award was established by Stanley Irwin Buell and Helen Elizabeth (Kent) Buell, who retired to Stratford, Prince Edward Island after many years of living and travelling around the world. Stan is originally from Parkdale, PEI and attended secondary school at Prince of Wales College and post-secondary school at Saint Dunstan's University prior to pursuing a career in engineering. Helen is from Stewiacke, Nova Scotia, and was a successful teacher in Halifax when she and Stan met. Stan and Helen enjoy a common love of all things artistic and cultural, with Helen having a particular passion for music. As a component of their intention to give back to Prince Edward Island, they have established awards at Holland College, and planned gifts for the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and the PEI Community Foundation. They are furthering their immense generosity to the Island through the establishment of this award for UPEI students.

This prize recognizes academic excellence and is part of the Congregation's commitment to education and higher learning in Prince Edward Island. The Congregation was founded in 1916 by Bishop Henry J. O'Leary with a vision to initiate works of charity for spiritual and social development in the Diocese of Charlottetown. Sister Ellen Mary Cullen, the first Congregational Leader, continued to advance this vision of God's call to holiness in Apostolic service. The Sisters of St. Martha have contributed numerous student awards to UPEI, demonstrating their deep-rooted history with education and higher education in Prince Edward Island.

Sister Mary Winnifred McIver Music Award

The Sister Mary Winnifred McIver Music Award is a student award offered at the University of Prince Edward Island for students in the Faculty of Arts. It is awarded to the student standing highest in second-year Music who has taken a minimum of 18 hours of Music credits in the previous year. The award has a maximum value of $500.00 and is determined by recommendation from the Department of Music. Sarah Grimble and Professor Catherine Innes-Parker Memorial Award

The Sarah Grimble and Professor Catherine Innes-Parker Memorial Award is a $500 award presented to a full-time first-year student who achieves the highest mark in English 121 at the University of Prince Edward Island. This award honors the memory of Sarah Grimble, who was born in 1921 and lived in London, Ontario and Winnipeg, Manitoba. Despite her aspiration to obtain a degree in English at the University of Manitoba, Sarah withdrew after one year so her sister Mary could attend university due to insufficient family funds. She then worked at the Royal Bank of Canada until retirement. Sarah was known for her lifelong generosity, serving as a beloved aunt and dedicating years as a cub pack leader. The award was established by her niece, Catherine Innes-Parker, and husband Kim Ian Parker, to help students in their first or second year of university—the time when Sarah herself had to withdraw for financial reasons. Sarah Grimble passed away on September 27, 2003, at age 81, remaining cheerful and loving throughout her illness. The award serves as a tribute to her memory and her characteristic generosity throughout her life.

Robert L. Pace - Maritime Broadcasting Systems Scholarships for Current Students

The Robert L. Pace - Maritime Broadcasting Systems Scholarships are awarded to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Applied Arts in Print Journalism program at the University of Prince Edward Island. Richelle and Michael Greathouse Award

Beginning in the fall of 2021, this award will be granted to a student in their third year of study that has identified a history or political science major. The student should demonstrate strong academic achievement, show a commitment to academic excellence and come recommended by their department. Further criteria may be applied by the adjudicating committee if required. The recipient will be recommended by the Dean of Arts in consultation with faculty. Regis & Joan Duffy Future Prosperity for PEI MAIS Scholarships

Two scholarships will be awarded each year to graduate students entering UPEI's MAIS program who have demonstrated excellence and will have a directed thesis topic that will benefit the economic future of Prince Edward Island. Selection criteria will be as follows: academic record, professional contributions, and demonstrated ability in the area of study. These scholarships were established by Dr. J. Regis and Mrs. Joan Duffy to support the future prosperity of Prince Edward Island. Regis and Joan's roots run deep in the Island's soil. They were born and raised on PEI, and Regis, with Joan's daily support, established a major compound manufacturing company. The company under their leadership was listed as one of Canada's Top 100 employers, and they both have had a lifelong commitment to the well-being of their companies and staff as well as the health of the PEI economy. The Duffy's have supported UPEI in immeasurable ways. As the University's Master of Arts, Island Studies (MAIS) program continues to grow, these scholarships are critical to attracting graduate students who display immense promise and a drive for excellence and discovery in terms of research that will enhance the Prince Edward Island community and economy.

Prince of Wales College Scholarship

The Prince of Wales College Scholarship is awarded to the student entering UPEI from a PEI high school who has been judged by the Scholarship Committee to best exemplify PWC's tradition of excellence. This prestigious scholarship recognizes students who demonstrate outstanding academic achievement and embody the values that Prince of Wales College has represented since 1804. In order for the scholarship to be renewed, the student must maintain a minimum average in a full course load (30 semester hours) of 75% after first year, and 80% after second and third year. The scholarship honors the legacy of Prince of Wales College, which dates back to 1804 when Edmund Fanning, the Island's second Lieutenant-Governor, granted land for the purpose of laying the foundation of a College for the education of youth in the learned languages, the arts and sciences, and all the branches of useful and polite literature.

Prince of Wales College Class of 1938 Award

This award is presented to the student from the current graduating class who is receiving a Bachelor of Science (BSc) with a Major or Honours in Biology and who has achieved the highest aggregate in the core Biology courses. The award recognizes outstanding academic achievement in biology at the undergraduate level. The Prince of Wales College Class of 1938 established this generous endowment fund at UPEI to support an award for a student who best exemplifies Prince of Wales College's tradition of excellence. The story of Prince of Wales College (PWC) dates back to 1804, when Edmund Fanning, the Island's second Lieutenant-Governor, granted two blocks of his own land to the Crown, as a site for the purpose of laying the foundation of a College for the education of youth in the learned languages, the arts and sciences, and all the branches of useful and polite literature.
