WE (Hank) Tatarchuk Athletic Award
The WE (Hank) Tatarchuk Athletic Award is awarded annually to an undergraduate or transfer student with satisfactory academic standing who is a member of the Golden Bears Basketball team. The recipient must fulfill all team requirements as determined by the head coach and demonstrate excellence in basketball. Recipients are chosen based on academic standing with a minimum grade point average of 2.0 on at least 18 units of course weight taken during the previous academic year. Preference is given to students registered in the Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation. This award is funded through endowed funds established by WE (Hank) Tatarchuk.
Van Vliet Family Football Award
The Van Vliet Family Football Award is presented to a student with satisfactory academic standing enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate course at the University of Alberta who is a member of the Golden Bears football team. This award recognizes both academic achievement and demonstrated athletic excellence. The award is provided through annual funds donated by Maury Van Vliet, supporting student-athletes who excel both in the classroom and on the football field.
University of Alberta Athletics Award
The University of Alberta Athletics Award is awarded to student-athletes with satisfactory academic standing entering, transferring, or continuing in undergraduate or graduate degree programs who are members of a Golden Bears or Pandas athletic team. Recipients will be selected on the basis of excellence in their sports, the potential shown to develop as significant contributors to the Golden Bears or Pandas programs, contributions made to their sports on and off the field, demonstrated leadership, and academic standing. Consideration may be given to indicated financial need. This award supports student-athletes who demonstrate both athletic excellence and academic achievement while being active members of the University of Alberta's varsity athletic programs.
Thomas Chong Memorial Award
The Thomas Chong Memorial Award is awarded annually to recognize excellence in athletics at the University of Alberta. One award is given to a Golden Bear and one to a Panda student athlete who are members of the University of Alberta Swim Team. Recipients must have satisfactory academic standing based on a minimum of 18 credits taken during the previous academic year. The award is based on excellence in their sport, leadership qualities, and demonstrated commitment to the team. Preference is given to athletes who have competed in diving and who are not already receiving other financial awards such as Jimmie Condon, Universiade, or National Carding awards. This memorial award honors Thomas Chong, a former coach of the University of Alberta Diving Team, and is funded through his estate. If no qualified applicants from the Swim Team apply, the award may be given to members of any other Golden Bears or Pandas Varsity Team.
Sylvia Jean Grant Memorial Award
The Sylvia Jean Grant Memorial Award is awarded to students with satisfactory academic standing enrolled in any year of an undergraduate degree in the Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation at the University of Alberta. Selection is based on academic standing. Preference is given to athletes who are members of the Golden Bears or Pandas track and field or basketball teams and/or to students who have to move to Edmonton to attend the University of Alberta. The award is funded through an endowment established by David B Grant, David F Grant and family and friends, in memory of their wife, mother, and lifelong friend Mrs Sylvia Jean Grant.
Stuermer Family Golden Bears Cross Country Award
The Stuermer Family Golden Bears Cross Country Award is a student award provided to undergraduate or graduate students at the University of Alberta who are members of the Golden Bears Cross Country Team. Recipients must maintain satisfactory academic standing and be eligible for competition in the year of the award. The selection process is based on both academic standing and demonstrated athletic excellence. This award is funded through an endowment established by Harvey and Lee Anne Stuermer to support student-athletes in the cross country program.
Stewart Family Award
The Stewart Family Award is an endowed scholarship awarded to University of Alberta students with satisfactory academic standing who are entering the second, third, or fourth year of a degree program. Applicants must be members of the Golden Bears or Pandas cross-country or track teams, specifically competing in middle or long distance events. The award recognizes students who demonstrate dedication and commitment to both academics and community service. In the selection process, contributions to positive team morale are given greater weight than individual athletic achievement, emphasizing the importance of teamwork and leadership qualities alongside academic and community engagement.
Stephen McKnight Golden Bears Hockey Award
The Stephen McKnight Golden Bears Hockey Award is awarded to student(s) with satisfactory academic standing enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree at the University of Alberta who are member(s) of the Golden Bears hockey program. Selection is based on the level of excellence shown in the sport, the potential shown to develop as a significant contributor to the Golden Bears hockey program, contributions made to the hockey team on and off the ice, and academic standing. This endowed award is funded by family and friends of Stephen McKnight to support student-athletes who demonstrate both athletic excellence and academic achievement in the Golden Bears hockey program.
Steele's Crossing Award
The Steele's Crossing Award is presented to undergraduate students in the Faculty of Science at the University of Alberta who are active members of the Golden Bears or Pandas swimming teams. Eligible students must maintain satisfactory academic standing and must have competed in the Canada West Championship (or equivalent competition) in both of the past two years. This award recognizes student-athletes who demonstrate excellence both in their academic pursuits and in competitive swimming. If no suitable candidate is found in the Faculty of Science, the award may be given to students in the Faculty of Graduate Studies (with a focus in Science), Faculty of Engineering, or Faculty of Agricultural, Life and Environmental Sciences or Nursing, in that priority order, provided all other eligibility criteria are met. The award is made possible through endowed funds generously provided by Mike Morrow.
Sports Wall of Fame T4K Awards - Renewable
The Sports Wall of Fame T4K Awards are renewable scholarships awarded to student(s) with satisfactory academic standing enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree at the University of Alberta who are members of a Golden Bears or Pandas athletics team. Selection is based on academic standing and excellence in their sport. This scholarship is renewable for a further two years provided the recipient maintains a minimum grade point average of 2.0 on a minimum of 18 units of course weight taken during the previous academic year. The award recognizes student-athletes who demonstrate both academic achievement and athletic excellence while representing the University of Alberta.
Sports Wall of Fame Awards - First Renewal
This award is renewed contingent upon the student achieving a minimum grade point average of 2.0 on a minimum of 18 credits taken during the previous academic year and remaining a member of a Golden Bears or Pandas athletic team, fulfilling all team requirements as determined by the head coach. This scholarship is renewable for a further year provided the recipient maintains satisfactory academic standing (2.0 grade point average on a minimum of 18 credits) and a practice and training program acceptable to their coach.
Simon Speller Memorial Award in Wrestling
The Simon Speller Memorial Award in Wrestling is awarded annually to an undergraduate or graduate student at the University of Alberta who is a member of the Golden Bears Wrestling Team. The award recognizes student-athletes who maintain satisfactory academic standing while demonstrating dedication to the team and outstanding effort in training and competition. Recipients must be enrolled in a minimum of 18 units of course weight and be eligible for competition in the year of the award. Selection is based on both academic standing and athletic commitment.
Sherwood Buick GMC Golden Bears Volleyball Award
The Sherwood Buick GMC Golden Bears Volleyball Award is awarded to a student who is a member of the Golden Bears volleyball team with satisfactory academic standing enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree at the University of Alberta. Selection is based on academic standing and demonstrated athletic excellence. This award is funded annually by Sherwood Buick GMC and supports student-athletes who excel both in the classroom and on the volleyball court.
Sherlock Holmes Athletics Award
The Sherlock Holmes Athletics Award is offered to students at the University of Alberta who demonstrate both academic excellence and athletic achievement. This award recognizes undergraduate or graduate students who maintain satisfactory academic standing while being active members of the Pandas or Golden Bears athletic teams. Selection is based on a combination of academic standing and demonstrated excellence in their chosen sport. The award is funded annually by The Sherlock Holmes Hospitality Group, reflecting their commitment to supporting student-athletes in their academic and athletic pursuits.
Schulha Family Golden Bears & Pandas Athletic Award
The Schulha Family Golden Bears & Pandas Athletic Award is an athletic scholarship awarded to students at the University of Alberta who are members of the Golden Bears or Pandas varsity teams. Recipients must maintain satisfactory academic standing while enrolled in undergraduate or graduate courses. The award recognizes students based on their demonstrated contributions to their athletic team. This award is funded annually by the Schulha Family and supports student-athletes in balancing their academic pursuits with their commitment to varsity athletics at the University of Alberta.
