School of Mathematical and Computational Sciences Graduating Student Award
The School of Mathematical and Computational Sciences Graduating Student Award is a prize established by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Prince Edward Island to recognize excellence in graduating students. The award will be granted to the top graduating major or honours student from the School of Mathematical and Computational Sciences, as recommended by the SMCS Awards Committee. This recognition highlights academic achievement and dedication in the field of mathematics and computational sciences at UPEI.
Saint Martha's Knights of Columbus Award in Memory of Father Charlie Cheverie
This award is granted to a student who completed their secondary education at Charlottetown Rural High School or Morell High School, will enter their first undergraduate degree program in the UPEI Faculty of Science, and has an interest in Biology. The award was established by the Saint Martha's Knights of Columbus in memory of Father Charlie Cheverie, who was a full-time Professor of Biology at St. Dunstan's University and then the University of Prince Edward Island for 35 years, retiring in 1997. He continued as the Catholic Chaplain on campus and was Pastor at St. Eugene's Parish in Covehead for about 40 years. Fr. Charlie was very active in supporting and involving young people in the Church and Community in various ways including socially and academically as well as in religion. He was a life member of the Knights of Columbus having served for over 50 years. The Knights of Columbus is a Catholic Men's Fraternal Service Organization founded in 1822 with about 2 million members worldwide, focused on charitable works supporting families in need. The St. Martha's Knights of Columbus is affiliated with St. Martha's Pastoral Unit consisting of the Catholic Parishes/Churches of St. Bonaventure's in Tracadie Cross, St. Michael's in Corran Ban and St. Eugene's in Covehead, with a primary focus on supporting individuals and/or families in need and selected community projects including youth-related initiatives.
Saint Dunstan's University Nurse Practitioners Renewable Awards
The Saint Dunstan's University Nurse Practitioners Renewable Awards are granted to UPEI students enrolled in the Master of Nursing - Nurse Practitioner Stream who are in financial need and intend to remain in Prince Edward Island for their nursing career. Preference will be given to applicants who can demonstrate that they have been the primary income earner in their family prior to entering the program. This renewable award supports students for up to two years, as recipients are eligible to receive this award for one additional year beyond their initial award. The award was established by the Board of Governors of St. Dunstan's University to foster Christian educational ideals and support nursing education at UPEI. The SDU Board of Governors has provided immeasurable support to UPEI through scholarships, awards, capital campaign contributions, and the Catholic Studies program since St. Dunstan's University closed its campus in 1969. In 2024, the board increased its support by establishing additional awards specifically for UPEI's nurse practitioner students.
Ruth Isabelle (Bull) Elliott Nursing Scholarship
This annual scholarship is awarded to a full-time returning nursing student who is in good academic standing and has demonstrated interest in pursuing a career in the mental health field. The recipient must be a resident of a maritime province, with preference given to a resident of New Brunswick. The scholarship was established by Victoria Ruth Isabelle Elliott to honour her beloved grandmother's dedication to and respect for the field of Nursing. Ruth Isabelle Elliott was a graduate of Victoria Public Hospital in Fredericton, New Brunswick in 1948, and practiced nursing in the United States and Canada during her early career. After residing in PEI since 1957, she continued to practice nursing part-time and volunteered with the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Meals on Wheels, her church and local schools while raising her four children. The scholarship commemorates Ruth's lifelong commitment to nursing and the fond recollections of her nursing career that were shared in family stories throughout her life.
Ruth Campbell Callbeck Memorial Scholarship
The Ruth Campbell Callbeck Memorial Scholarship is granted to a student who is entering the University of Prince Edward Island and is normally resident on PEI. Preference will be given to a member of the Women's Panther Hockey Team. If there are no qualifying candidates, the scholarship can be granted to a returning student with the same criteria. This scholarship honors Ruth Campbell Callbeck, described by her son William Callbeck as a pillar in her family, her community and in their family-owned business. Ruth was also a leader, being one of the first women on P.E.I. to play professional hockey with the Crystal Sisters. The team was driven by a small group of talented athletes whose persistence established the sport at a competitive level. Ruth taught school, first in a one-room school house in Bedeque at the age of 16, then in Summerside at Parkside School. She married Ralph Callbeck and took an active role in the family business in Central Bedeque. Ruth was an astute businesswoman and an active member of her community, involved in a number of community groups including the Women's Institute. The family she and Ralph built included William, who ran the family business for many years, and Catherine, who was the first women ever elected premier in Canada and held a seat in the Senate of Canada for many years. Ruth Campbell Callbeck passed away at the age of 93 on June 19, 2001. This scholarship has been created by her family to honour the contributions she made to her family, their business, her community, the teaching profession, and competitive sport.
Russell S. Ramsay Memorial Trust Scholarship
Awarded to a graduating student from Westisle Composite High who is entering the first year of the Bachelor of Nursing program or the Bachelor of Business Administration program at UPEI. The recipient will be the student with the highest academic standing entering either of the above programs. The recipient should also show a concern and compassion for the welfare of others. Russell S. Ramsay was born and raised in Rosebank, PEI, where he operated the family farm and a trucking business. During W.W. II he became a Life Underwriter for the Canada Life Assurance Co. In his first year, he was recognized as the best salesman for the entire company (including Canada, U.S. and the British Isles). This annual scholarship was made possible through a gift in his memory by his widow, Cordelia Ramsay-Butler (deceased 1996).
Russell and Florence Diamond Award
This award is presented annually to a student who is entering second, third or fourth year of study at the University of Prince Edward Island. Recipients must demonstrate good academic standing, initiative and leadership in the classroom, with preference given to students who are 'first in family' to attend university. The scholarship was established in honour of Russell and Florence Diamond by their children (Wayne (UPEI Class of '75), Glenda, Beverly, (UPEI Class of '76), Lillian, Blaine and Juanita). Russell and Florence both left school early to assist in supporting their families and farmed after they were married. They were very committed to education for their children and served on the school board of their children's local school. They transmitted to their children the value of performing at each child's personal best in all endeavors, especially in academic pursuits. They worked to ensure their children were afforded the opportunity to pursue post-secondary education and excel in their chosen professions. The children of Russell and Florence created this award to honour their parents and their commitment to their children's education. Beginning in academic year 2011/12, this award was annually funded and given as a tribute to Russell and Florence Diamond, and the impact they had on their children and their belief and commitment to post-secondary education. In December 2015, the award was endowed and will be given in perpetuity.
Royal Commonwealth Society (PEI Branch) Award
Awarded annually to a UPEI student from a Commonwealth country in any field of study. The award is based on academic excellence and need. It seeks to recognize students who will use their studies to contribute to the development of their country of origin. Preference will be given to a student who is not normally resident in Canada. The Royal Commonwealth Society's purpose is to promote the increase and spread of knowledge respecting the people's and countries of the Commonwealth. This is pursued by the formation of regional branches and through a variety of educational activities. Awards provide incentive and recognize and promote academic excellence among the student body. They also assist students in overcoming financial barriers which otherwise could jeopardize the successful completion of their studies.
Rotary Club of Charlottetown Foundation Doris Bradley Awards
Beginning in the fall of 2020, the Rotary Club of Charlottetown Foundation Doris Bradley Awards will be granted to two students with a documented disability who has overcome barriers in their educational pursuits and has demonstrated leadership or volunteerism/community service. If there is only one qualifying recipient, the student will receive $2,000, the full value of both awards. The Rotary Club of Charlottetown was founded in 1917 and has a proud history of serving the residents of PEI. For many years, the Club has supported various awards at UPEI. In 2016, the Club renewed its commitment by supporting students with disabilities. Students with disabilities are applying to universities at unprecedented rates, with 433 students registered at UPEI for accessibility supports in 2016 compared to 126 in 2009. These awards assist students with disabilities with financial burdens and build confidence and pride critical to their overall success.
Ronald J. Baker Alumni Scholarship
The Ronald J. Baker Alumni Scholarship is awarded to a full-time student entering their second year at the University of Prince Edward Island who achieved the highest average while carrying at least a normal load of five courses per semester in their first year program. This scholarship recognizes academic performance and is stackable with other UPEI awards, meaning recipients can receive additional funding from other university scholarships and awards simultaneously.
Ron McInnis Men's Hockey Scholarship
The Ron McInnis Men's Hockey Scholarship is awarded annually to a full-time UPEI student who is a member of the UPEI Men's hockey team. The scholarship was established by Ron McInnis, UPEI BBA '78 and a respected member of Panther Hockey alumni (1974-78). Ron, a native Islander, has had a long and successful career in the financial industry, and is currently Senior Vice-President, Prairie Region, for the TD Bank. Ron attributes much of his success to his experience at the University of Prince Edward Island, both academically and as a Panther athlete. He believes that his time at UPEI, particularly playing varsity hockey, was a significant factor in how his career and life has developed. Beginning in the fall of 2009, one scholarship valued at $2,500 will be available annually to a full-time UPEI student who is a member of the UPEI hockey team and currently lives in, or is originally from Prince Edward Island. If entering first year, the recipient must have achieved an academic standing of 80% in high school, in accordance with CIAU regulations. Players in 2nd, 3rd or 4th year are eligible if they have successfully completed 18 semester hours in the previous academic year with a strong academic standing.
Ron Irving Award for Excellence in Theatre
Awarded to a graduating student with the highest mark in the Theatre Practicum (Theatre 444) who is also graduating with a minor in Theatre. This award was established by the Coordinator of the Theatre Studies Program at UPEI to recognize excellence by a student graduating with a Minor in Theatre.
Rogers-Cairns Scholarship
The Rogers-Cairns Scholarship is awarded to a third- or fourth-year student at the University of Prince Edward Island who must be abstainers from tobacco, alcohol, and non-medicinal drugs. The scholarship selection is based on academic standing, integrity, and character. Application forms can be picked up at Scholarships & Awards in the Registrar's Office, and the selection of the scholarship is administered by the Board of Trustees of Trinity United Church. This award recognizes students who demonstrate strong academic performance and maintain healthy lifestyle choices while pursuing their undergraduate degree at UPEI.
Roderick Stirling MacDonald Scholarships for the School of Climate Change and Adaptation (Returning)
Granted to five (5) students entering their third year of UPEI's School of Climate Change and Adaptation who have achieved an 80% or greater academic average in the previous year of study and have demonstrated a passion for improving the effects of climate change. In December 2017, UPEI received a $1,000,000 gift from the Estate of H. Ruth MacDonald. She remembered UPEI through a planned gift in her Will in memory of her husband Roderick. The significant contribution she provided will create many scholarships and impact numerous students, assisting in imparting them with skills that will enhance our local and global communities. Including an additional gift received in the summer of 2019, over $1,200,000 will support academically gift undergraduate and graduate students at UPEI.
Roderick Stirling MacDonald Scholarships for the School of Climate Change and Adaptation (Entrance)
The Roderick Stirling MacDonald Scholarships for the School of Climate Change and Adaptation are entrance awards granted to ten (10) students entering their first year of UPEI's School of Climate Change and Adaptation. Recipients must have achieved an 80% or greater academic average in the previous year of study and have demonstrated a passion for improving the effects of climate change. These scholarships were established through a significant planned gift from the Estate of H. Ruth MacDonald, who remembered UPEI in her Will in memory of her husband Roderick. In December 2017, UPEI received a $1,000,000 gift from the Estate, with an additional gift received in summer 2019, bringing the total to over $1,200,000. This substantial contribution supports academically gifted undergraduate and graduate students at UPEI, providing them with skills that will enhance local and global communities.

Robertson Accessibility Award
The Robertson Accessibility Award is granted to a student in their second year of study in the Faculty of Sustainable Design Engineering program who is registered with UPEI Accessibility Services (mental health support) and is in financial need. If there are no qualifying Engineering candidates, a student in one of UPEI's STEM programs will be selected. If there are two equally qualifying candidates, preference will be given to a woman student. This award will be renewable for the successful recipient's third and fourth year of study. The award was established in 1980 when Susan Claire (Robertson) Cameron, daughter of Mark and Betty Robertson, graduated as one of the first two women with a Diploma of Engineering. This program supported the studies needed for a further degree in Mechanical Engineering from UNB, a career in the Royal Canadian Air Force and then as a professional in Project and Change Management. This award is offered to a student who may need support to pursue their goals. Additionally, this award is offered in recognition of the support from Susan Claire's father, Mark Robertson, who encouraged her to enter what was at the time a non-traditional field for women.
Robert J. Connaughton Sr. Memorial Award
The Robert J. Connaughton Sr. Memorial Award is granted to a student in financial need, with preference given first to a member of the Holland College football team (or UPEI football team, in the event of program revival); secondly, to a UPEI Track and Field Team member; thirdly, to a UPEI Hockey team member. This award was established by the family of Robert J. Connaughton Sr. Bob Sr., born January 20, 1923, passed away on February 27, 1997, leaving his wife, Jane, four sons, two daughters, seven grandsons, and four granddaughters. All his children and grandchildren were involved in sports at the high school and/or collegiate level. Three of Bob Sr.'s sons played football for the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI). Two of his grandchildren were born in PEI and participated in various athletic programs. As a result, Bob Sr. visited the Island as often as possible, vacationing there and attending UPEI football and hockey games. Although baseball was his own primary sport, football and hockey were his favorite spectator sports. Given his interest in sports, particularly at the scholastic and collegiate levels, and his connections with PEI and its university, Bob Sr.'s extended family felt that an annual gift to UPEI to use in financial support of a UPEI student athlete would be a fitting memorial to him and one of which he would be very proud.
Robert "Rocky" Paquet Memorial Award
The Robert "Rocky" Paquet Memorial Award is granted to a returning student at the University of Prince Edward Island who has volunteered in the university or broader community and loves music and animals. Preference will be given to a student who demonstrates a history of enriching the UPEI campus through activities and volunteerism. This award commemorates Robert "Rocky" Paquet, who was a valued employee of UPEI for 26 years and had an immeasurable impact on students through his compassion, kindness, and dedication. Rocky was known for cooking hotdogs for students during his lunch, handing out popsicles, and preparing meals for nearly 700 students during exam week. He was voted UPEI Staff of the Year in 2014 and received the President's Recognition Award of Merit for Campus Spirit in 2013. Rocky had a love for music and animals, particularly his canine companions, and was known for his generous nature and ability to bring the campus community together.
Richelle and Michael Greathouse Award
Beginning in the fall of 2021, this award will be granted to a student in their third year of study that has identified a history or political science major. The student should demonstrate strong academic achievement, show a commitment to academic excellence and come recommended by their department. Further criteria may be applied by the adjudicating committee if required. The recipient will be recommended by the Dean of Arts in consultation with faculty. Richelle Greathouse is an UPEI alumna, current student, and staff member. She and her husband Michael have decided to establish this award for an Arts student at the university.
Reverend Vincent Murnaghan Memorial Scholarship
The Reverend Vincent Murnaghan Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a qualified refugee or foreign student who displays commitment to working for social justice and to improving the living conditions in the community and on the planet, and who demonstrates high academic achievement or evidence of academic potential. The scholarship was established by the Cooper Institute in conjunction with the University of Prince Edward Island in honor of Father Murnaghan, who was a Professor of Commerce at St. Dunstan's University and served as an administrator within the Commerce faculty until his resignation in 1969. Father Murnaghan was a founding member of Cooper Institute and firmly believed in the power of oppressed and marginalized people to create social change. He had a special interest in Third World development, having spent five years as a missionary in the Dominican Republic, where he developed a compassion for disadvantaged people that extended to other developing countries and disadvantaged sectors in Canada. Shortly before his death in November 2001, he was honored by UPEI as a Founder at the University's second Founder's Day celebration, where he shared his dream for UPEI to become the first university in Canada to offer free tuition.
Reshard Gool Award for Creative Writing
The Reshard Gool Award for Creative Writing is awarded to a full-time UPEI student for excellence in Creative Writing. The recipient is chosen by the Department of English, on the advice of those departmental members associated with the Creative Writing program. This award recognizes outstanding achievement in creative writing and is intended to support and encourage students pursuing excellence in this field within the Faculty of Arts at the University of Prince Edward Island.
Regis & Joan Duffy Future Prosperity for PEI MAIS Scholarships
Two scholarships will be awarded each year to graduate students entering UPEI's MAIS program who have demonstrated excellence and will have a directed thesis topic that will benefit the economic future of Prince Edward Island. Selection criteria will be as follows: academic record, professional contributions, and demonstrated ability in the area of study. These scholarships were established by Dr. J. Regis and Mrs. Joan Duffy to support the future prosperity of Prince Edward Island. Regis and Joan's roots run deep in the Island's soil. They were born and raised on PEI, and Regis, with Joan's daily support, established a major compound manufacturing company. The company under their leadership was listed as one of Canada's Top 100 employers, and they both have had a lifelong commitment to the well-being of their companies and staff as well as the health of the PEI economy. The Duffy's have supported UPEI in immeasurable ways. As the University's Master of Arts, Island Studies (MAIS) program continues to grow, these scholarships are critical to attracting graduate students who display immense promise and a drive for excellence and discovery in terms of research that will enhance the Prince Edward Island community and economy.
Ramasamy Nagarajan Memorial Award
The Ramasamy Nagarajan Memorial Award is an annual scholarship offered by the University of Prince Edward Island to graduating students in the Bachelor of Arts degree program. This award recognizes academic excellence in the field of Economics. The scholarship is awarded to the graduating student with the highest standing in the Bachelor of Arts degree program majoring in Economics. The award honors the memory of Ramasamy Nagarajan and supports outstanding achievement in economic studies at UPEI.
Queen Elizabeth Hospital Auxiliary Prize - Florence MacKenzie Roper Memorial Prize
Presented annually to a Nursing student entering fourth year of the four year Bachelor of Science Nursing degree who demonstrates an outstanding bedside manner, knowledge and skill in clinical practice, and not already receiving another donor funded scholarship of more than $1,000. The Queen Elizabeth Hospital Auxiliary is an organization of citizens interested in supporting the goals and vision of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital by providing service to its patients and staff. The Auxiliary works in conjunction with the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Foundation to fundraise and promote community awareness of the hospital, its function, and its needs. In 1995, the Auxiliary created this award to recognize longtime auxiliary member, Florence MacKenzie Roper, RN. Mrs. Roper had dedicated over 60 years of service to PEI and PEI hospital auxiliaries. In addition to her incredible contributions to the QEH Auxiliary, Florence (nee Platts) was an active member of Trinity United Church as a member of the choir and a participant in the United Church Women's group. In 2017, the QEH Auxiliary decided to provide a one-time gift to fully endow this award. It will now live on in perpetuity.
Psychology Department Award
The Psychology Department Award is a merit-based scholarship offered by the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) to recognize academic excellence in psychology studies. This award is presented to the student entering their fourth year of study who has achieved the highest average across all completed Psychology courses. The selection process is managed by the University's Scholarships and Awards Committee, ensuring a fair and rigorous evaluation of eligible candidates. With a maximum value of $200, this award acknowledges outstanding academic performance and provides financial support to students pursuing advanced studies in psychology at UPEI.
Proficiency in Theriogenology Award
This award is given to a graduating student in veterinary medicine at the Atlantic Veterinary College demonstrating proficiency in theriogenology. The award recognizes academic excellence and demonstrated skill in the field of theriogenology, which encompasses the study of animal reproduction. This is an internal award for students completing their Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree at UPEI's Atlantic Veterinary College.
Professor George E. Robinson Scholarship
The Professor George E. Robinson Scholarship is awarded to a deserving second year student at the University of Prince Edward Island. The scholarship is based on academic achievement and financial need. This award provides financial support of up to $495 CAD to help students continue their undergraduate studies. Applicants must be current second year students who can demonstrate both strong academic performance and financial need. The scholarship honors Professor George E. Robinson and supports students pursuing their educational goals at UPEI.
Professor Earl Wonnacott Prize
The Professor Earl Wonnacott Prize is awarded to the student ranking highest in Physics 2920 - Stars, Galaxies and the Universe (formerly Physics 252 - Astronomy). This prize was created through donations by UPEI faculty honoring retired astronomy professor, Earl Wonnacott. The award recognizes outstanding academic achievement in astronomy studies at the University of Prince Edward Island.
Professor Don MacEwen SSDE Inspirational Award
Awarded to a student graduating from the Bachelor of Science in Sustainable Design Engineering who is an inspiration to classmates; demonstrates academic excellence and exceptional engagement in project-based design; and has shown the highest ethical standards as demonstrated by Professor MacEwen over his many years of outstanding teaching and engineering practice. This award recognizes Professor Don MacEwen's 40 years of exemplary teaching at UPEI and his dedication to engineering education. Professor MacEwen has been instrumental in developing Canadian engineering standards, ethics guidelines, and professional qualifications, while serving as a beloved mentor to generations of engineering students. The award was established in 2017 upon his retirement to honor his legacy of inspiring students to excellence in both technical competence and ethical practice in the engineering profession.
Prize for Excellence in French
The Prize for Excellence in French is awarded to a graduating student who has demonstrated exceptional performance in French language and literature studies. This prize recognizes outstanding academic achievement in French coursework within the Faculty of Arts at the University of Prince Edward Island. The award is presented to a student who has excelled in their French studies throughout their undergraduate degree program and is graduating from UPEI.
Prince of Wales College Scholarship
The Prince of Wales College Scholarship is awarded to the student entering UPEI from a PEI high school who has been judged by the Scholarship Committee to best exemplify PWC's tradition of excellence. This prestigious scholarship recognizes students who demonstrate outstanding academic achievement and embody the values that Prince of Wales College has represented since 1804. In order for the scholarship to be renewed, the student must maintain a minimum average in a full course load (30 semester hours) of 75% after first year, and 80% after second and third year. The scholarship honors the legacy of Prince of Wales College, which dates back to 1804 when Edmund Fanning, the Island's second Lieutenant-Governor, granted land for the purpose of laying the foundation of a College for the education of youth in the learned languages, the arts and sciences, and all the branches of useful and polite literature.
Prince of Wales College Class of 1938 Award
This award is presented to the student from the current graduating class who is receiving a Bachelor of Science (BSc) with a Major or Honours in Biology and who has achieved the highest aggregate in the core Biology courses. The award recognizes outstanding academic achievement in biology at the undergraduate level. The Prince of Wales College Class of 1938 established this generous endowment fund at UPEI to support an award for a student who best exemplifies Prince of Wales College's tradition of excellence. The story of Prince of Wales College (PWC) dates back to 1804, when Edmund Fanning, the Island's second Lieutenant-Governor, granted two blocks of his own land to the Crown, as a site for the purpose of laying the foundation of a College for the education of youth in the learned languages, the arts and sciences, and all the branches of useful and polite literature.
Prince Edward Island Service Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was created as a companion memorial to the Prince Edward Island Service Memorial Fountain in Queen Square. Scholarships will support students who are family members of those who have served and have themselves volunteered service to their community, province and country. The Prince Edward Island Service Memorial Fountain located in Queen Square, Charlottetown, commemorates the service of Prince Edward Islanders in Canada's Armed Forces in the interest of peace and security in our nation, both within our borders and around the world. It also recognizes the service and sacrifice of police and peace officers who maintain law and order, and members of our fire service who protect our lives and property. The scholarship is awarded to a student who is a PEI resident, serves/served, or has ancestors or family members who served, in the Canadian Armed Forces, Royal Canadian Navy, Canadian Army, Royal Canadian Air Force, Royal Canadian Sea, Army or Air Cadets.
Prince Edward Island Law Society/Law Foundation Epekwitnewa'j Mi'kmaw (a Mi'kmaq Prince Edward Islander) Student Award
This award is granted to an Epekwitnewa'j Mi'kmaw (a Mi'kmaq Prince Edward Islander) residing in PEI who is enrolled in any full-time UPEI program. Preference will be given to those who have demonstrated community service and/or who are promoting the values of Canadian reconciliation, as evidenced through a short essay in their personal statement. In the event of equally qualified candidates, financial need will be the deciding factor. The PEI Law Society/Law Foundation created an award in January 2009 to support UPEI students. In 2023, they increased the value of that award and added an additional award. In 2023, Mary Lynn Kane contacted the University of Prince Edward Island to establish this specific award for PEI students enrolled in any full-time program who is an Epekwitnewa'j Mi'kmaw.
Prince Edward Island Law Society/Law Foundation Award
The Prince Edward Island Law Society/Law Foundation Award is awarded to a returning student who has completed Political Studies 211, 401 or Business Law 301 and is currently enrolled in or has completed Political Studies 212, 402 or Business Law 302, and is a PEI resident with scholastic achievement. The Law Society is an independent, self-governing profession with the main task of regulating the practice of law within the province. The Law Society is governed by legislation passed by the PEI Legislature in 1992 called the Legal Profession Act. The Act outlines the Society's objectives to uphold and protect the public interest in the administration of justice, establish standards for education, professional responsibility, and competence of members and applicants, ensure the independence, integrity and honour of the society and its members, regulate the practice of law, and uphold and protect the interests of members. The PEI Law Society/Law Foundation created this award to support and encourage students who study law.
Prince County Hospital Auxiliary Gift Shop Volunteers Award
The Prince County Hospital Auxiliary Gift Shop Volunteers Award is a $500 award designed to support nursing students who demonstrate financial need and a commitment to volunteerism. This award recognizes students who are actively engaged in giving back to their communities through volunteer work. Awarded annually to a full-time student in their second or third year of study in either the BSc. in Nursing or Accelerated BSc. Nursing program at the University of Prince Edward Island. Preference is given to students from Prince County, PEI, reflecting the award's connection to the local community and the Prince County Hospital Auxiliary's mission to support healthcare education and community service.
President's Scholarship for Entering Nursing Student
The President's Scholarship for Entering Nursing Student is an entrance award provided by the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI). This scholarship is awarded to a student who is entering the four year degree program in the Faculty of Nursing at UPEI. The award recognizes academic achievement and provides financial support to help students begin their nursing education. With a maximum amount of $500, this scholarship assists incoming nursing students as they embark on their undergraduate studies in nursing at one of Canada's leading universities.
President's Scholarship for Entering International Student
The President's Scholarship for Entering International Student is awarded to a student who generally resides in a country outside of North America and is entering undergraduate studies at the University of Prince Edward Island. This entrance award provides financial support up to $500 to help international students begin their academic journey at UPEI. Recipients are recommended by International Admissions based on their qualifications and background as incoming international undergraduate students.
Pomerleau Renewable Scholarship for an Abegweit First Nation Indigenous Student
Granted to an Abegweit First Nation full-time Indigenous student who is entering any academic program at the University of Prince Edward Island. Preference will be given to students in the greatest financial need enrolled in one of UPEI's undergraduate STEM programs (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics). Should there be no qualifying candidates, a Lennox Island First Nation Indigenous student will be selected using the same criteria. Pending successful completion of the first year of study, this scholarship will be renewable for each subsequent year of the student's enrolment in a STEM program for a maximum total of four years support. Established by Pomerleau, a Canadian leader in the construction industry, in November 2023 to support Indigenous students at UPEI.

One of its major projects is the renovation of the Daniel J. MacDonald Building in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. It is a story of growth and evolution, propelling what started as a small company from Beauce, Quebec into the coast-to-coast business it is today. In November 2023, Pomerleau generously decided to establish two renewable scholarships for UPEI Indigenous students.
Polyclinic Prize
The Polyclinic Prize is awarded annually to the recipient of the Governor General's Silver Medal, recognizing the student with the highest aggregate in four years of a university program at the University of Prince Edward Island. This prestigious award was established by The Polyclinic Professional Centre in Charlottetown, PEI, a comprehensive medical facility that includes family physicians, obstetricians, gynaecologists, internal medicine specialists, a physiotherapy department, optical store and drug store. The award represents academic excellence and outstanding achievement throughout a student's entire undergraduate career, with the $1,000 prize honoring the top-performing graduating student at UPEI.
Physics Department Prize in Modern Physics
This award is presented to the student ranking highest in Physics 221 based on the recommendation of the Chair of the Physics Department. The prize was established by Dr. Derek Lawther, a faculty member of the Department of Physics at UPEI, to recognize academic achievement and to encourage students to consider majoring or minoring in physics. The award is valued at $200 and is available to current second-year students enrolled in the Faculty of Science at the University of Prince Edward Island.
Physics Department Prize
The Physics Department Prize is awarded to the top first-year student who has declared Physics as their choice of Major with the Registrar's Office and is enrolled in Physics 221 and 211 in their second year. The student with the highest marks in Physics 111, 122, or 112 and Math 151 and 152 will be selected. This prize was created by the Physics Department in 2006 to recognize the top performing first year student who is returning to second year and intending to major in Physics at UPEI.
Peter J. Tremblay Memorial Award
The Peter J. Tremblay Memorial Award is presented to a returning Panther athlete in good academic standing who has demonstrated exceptional dedication to their sport and shown involvement in campus life. The award recognizes the most well-rounded athlete among returning student-athletes at the University of Prince Edward Island. This award is supported by the Panther Athletes Endowment Fund, which was established at UPEI to support Panther Athletic Financial Awards. The creation of this fund was made possible through many generous gifts, including a significant estate gift from the late Peter J. Tremblay (BBA '75) and a contribution from Compass Group. The award celebrates the legacy of Peter J. Tremblay while supporting student-athletes who excel both in their sport and in their broader campus community engagement.
Percy and Helen Murphy Memorial Scholarship
The Percy and Helen Murphy Memorial Scholarship is awarded to an incoming high school student from Souris Regional School with the highest academic average based on courses used for admission. In the case of two equally qualifying candidates, preference will be given to a student entering the Faculty of Science if possible. This scholarship was established at the University of Prince Edward Island in memory of Percy and Helen (Mooney) Murphy of Elmira, PEI, created by their daughter Joan (Murphy) Duffy and her husband Regis Duffy in respect and appreciation of the Murphy's commitment to family and lifelong learning. The scholarship may be renewed for second, third, and fourth year based on the same eligibility requirements and scholarship values as established for UPEI's Celebrating Student Achievement program. Helen attended St. Mary's convent and obtained her teacher's license at Prince of Wales College in 1928, teaching at various schools before marrying Percy Murphy. Percy worked on the C.N. Railway for thirty-five years and together they ran the P.J. Murphy General Store in Elmira.
PEI's Famous Five Graduating Student Award
Beginning in May 2019, the PEI's Famous Five Graduating Student Award will be granted to a graduating student who has held a leadership role while a student at UPEI and/or plans to pursue a career in politics. Preference will be given to women students. This award honours five women who, in 1993, held five of the most influential positions in the province of Prince Edward Island: Premier Catherine Callbeck, Leader of the Opposition Pat Mella, Speaker of the House Nancy Guptill, Lieutenant Governor Marion Reid, and Deputy Premier Elizabeth Libbe Hubley. This was the first and last time in Canadian history that five women held these positions simultaneously. The award is established to encourage the next generation of women political leaders and is aligned with the work of the PEI Coalition for Women in Government, which works to increase women's leadership at all levels of government.
PEI Teachers' Federation: F. J. MacNeill Award
The PEI Teachers' Federation: F. J. MacNeill Award is awarded to a student entering the Bachelor of Education program at the University of Prince Edward Island. The award recognizes students who demonstrate promise for inspirational teaching, have shown school or community leadership and/or involvement, and possess a well-balanced academic record. This scholarship supports students who are committed to pursuing a career in education and who have shown dedication to their communities.
PEI Teachers' Federation: Estelle Bowness Award
The PEI Teachers' Federation: Estelle Bowness Award is an annual award offered by the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) to support students entering the Bachelor of Education program. The award recognizes students who demonstrate promise for becoming inspirational teachers and who have shown leadership and involvement in their school or community. Recipients must have a well-balanced academic record and show potential for excellence in the teaching profession. The award provides financial support of up to $1,000 to assist students as they begin their journey in teacher education at UPEI's Faculty of Education.
PEI School of Nursing Trust: Sister Mary Gabriel Master of Nursing Awards
Awarded to two students in the UPEI Master of Nursing Program who have demonstrated need for financial assistance in order to pursue their degree. Preference will be given to entrance students. These awards were established through an amendment to the agreement between the PEI School of Nursing upon its discontinuation of operation, the Hospital and Health Services Commission, the Prince County Hospital, and the University of Prince Edward Island. That agreement was made based on the desire to provide lasting recognition to the contribution of the PEI School of Nursing to the development of the profession in Prince Edward Island and to promote educational opportunity for Island students at the UPEI School of Nursing. In March, 2011, the Trustees of the PEI School of Nursing Trust Fund approved changes to the dissemination of the fund to include a fund specifically in support of Master of Nursing awards at UPEI.
PEI Road Builders and Heavy Construction Association "Frank W. Curtis Memorial Scholarship"
Awarded to a returning student entering the third year of the Sustainable Design Engineering program with the highest academic average in the previous year. The scholarship may be renewable on condition that the student continues in the Sustainable Design Engineering program in the fourth year and maintains an academic average of 80% or higher. This annual award was established at the University of Prince Edward Island in 1986 by the PEI Road Builders and Heavy Construction Association in memory of Frank W. Curtis, a founding member and subsequently general manager of the Association for many years. The Association is comprised of companies sharing a common goal -- a strong, effective voice in the Heavy Construction Industry and was incorporated in 1962. The PEI Road Builders and Heavy Construction Association considers the highway system to be the lifeblood of the economy, supporting commerce including farming, agriculture, fishing, fish-related products and tourism. Good and safe roads are required for the general traveling public, thus the Association supports education of students in the Engineering profession through the Frank W. Curtis Memorial Award.

The PEI Retired Teachers' Association Scholarship is awarded annually to a student entering the Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) program at the University of Prince Edward Island. The scholarship is specifically designed to support students who attended a Prince Edward Island high school during their secondary education years. The award recognizes the highest ranking student based on their first undergraduate degree who is not already receiving a major donor-funded award. The PEI Retired Teachers' Association has been in existence for decades with primary objectives to assist its members in staying abreast of developments in education, maintaining professional contacts, and meeting with government regarding improved terms for retired teachers. Members of the PEIRTA act as volunteers in their communities, host many activities, and provide financial support to future teachers through scholarships and awards like this one.

In addition to its endowed entrance scholarship and annually funded graduation prize, the PEIRTA generously decided to establish this award in support of a B.Ed. entrance student.
PEI Home Economics Association "Doris M. Anderson Senior" Award
This award is granted annually to a UPEI student who completed secondary education at a Prince Edward Island high school and is entering the fourth year of study in the Applied Human Sciences at UPEI with a focus on Family and/or Nutritional Sciences. Candidates must have maintained an academic average of 80% or greater in their previous year of study, demonstrated a positive attitude toward the profession of family and/or nutritional sciences, and have a record of participating in non-academic activities on campus or in the community. The award honors Doris M. Anderson, who had an extraordinary life and immense impact in the field of home economics. Born in St. Peter's in 1922, Doris received her Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics from Acadia University in 1944 and later earned a Master of Science in Nutrition from Cornell University. She served as the first Supervisor of Home Economics in the PEI Department of Education and was a professor at Prince of Wales College and UPEI from 1966 to 1988. Her expertise on celiac disease proved invaluable to families in the Maritimes, and she was awarded the 1967 Centennial Medal for outstanding service to the nation. Doris became a Member of the Order of Canada in 1982 and was appointed to the Senate of Canada in 1995. The PEI Home Economics Association established this award at UPEI in honor of Doris M. Anderson and her many accomplishments.
PEI Energy Corporation MCLT Entrance Merit Awards
The PEI Energy Corporation MCLT Entrance Merit Awards are granted to incoming Master of Cleantech Leadership and Transformation (MCLT) students at the University of Prince Edward Island who have demonstrated strong academic performance in their undergraduate studies. These awards recognize and support students entering this graduate program who have achieved a minimum average of 80% in their last two years of undergraduate study. The awards are merit-based entrance scholarships designed to attract high-achieving students to the MCLT program. Each scholarship ranges in value from $1,000 to $3,000, providing financial support to help offset the costs of graduate education and encourage academic excellence in the field of clean technology leadership and transformation.
PEI Energy Corporation Cleantech Leaders Scholarships for UPEI Alumni
The PEI Energy Corporation Cleantech Leaders Scholarships for UPEI Alumni is a financial award granted to alumni of the University of Prince Edward Island. This scholarship supports graduates who have received acceptance into the Master of Cleantech and Transformation program (MCLT) at UPEI. The award is valued at a maximum of $2,500 and is granted in the fall semester. Recipients are recommended by the Faculty of Graduate Studies, recognizing their commitment to advancing cleantech innovation and transformation through graduate-level education.
PEI Advisory Council on the Status of Women Engineering Bursary
The PEI Advisory Council on the Status of Women Engineering Bursary is awarded to women studying Engineering at UPEI, in recognition and support of women pursuing non-traditional fields. This bursary was established in 1995 by the Government of PEI on the twentieth Anniversary of the PEI Advisory Council on the Status of Women. The bursary supports the efforts of the PEI Advisory Council's work to encourage girls to choose careers in Math and Science fields. The bursary also pays tribute to the fourteen women engineering students who were murdered at L'Ecole Polytechnique in 1989. The bursary is awarded to a female entering third year who maintains a passing average and demonstrates financial need.
Peake and McInnis Ltd. Prize in Business
The Peake and McInnis Ltd. Prize in Business is awarded to a graduating Business student who has demonstrated to an outstanding degree qualities of scholarship and leadership within the University community. This prize was established by Peake and McInnis Ltd., a family-owned and operated general Insurance Brokerage with a history in the Property & Casualty Insurance business dating back to 1912. Recognizing the value of solid education, Peake & McInnis Ltd. created this prize to honor exceptional UPEI Business students who excel both academically and as campus leaders.
Paula "Suzanne" MacPherson Memorial Scholarship
The Paula "Suzanne" MacPherson Memorial Scholarship is granted to a third or fourth year full-time undergraduate student enrolled in the Faculty of Business at UPEI who best exemplifies the spirit and legacy of Suzanne MacPherson. Suzanne was an alumna of UPEI and served as VP Finance on the UPEI Student Union Executive. In her career in business, she radiated a caring attitude, instilled a sense of purpose and encouragement in her colleagues, was genuinely authentic with a determination to be honest and resilient, and is remembered for her integrity, selflessness, and ability to light up a room with laughter. If there are two or more equally qualifying candidates, the student in the greatest financial need will be the recipient of this scholarship. Established in the spring of 2018 by Stan and Heather MacPherson in memory of their daughter, Paula "Suzanne" MacPherson, who passed away in March 2016 at the age of 49. Suzanne was a proud alumna of the University of Prince Edward Island (BBA '93) and had a successful career in business in Arizona. This scholarship honors her amazing attributes and the positive impact she had on those around her, with the hope that each year's recipient will display some or all of Suzanne's qualities of caring, authenticity, integrity, and selflessness.
Paul "Ryan" Pineau Award
The Paul "Ryan" Pineau Award is presented to the graduating student who has achieved the highest mark in Accounting 4310, Income Taxation, at the University of Prince Edward Island School of Business. This award was established by Ryan Pineau as a tribute to his commitment to university studies and the field of accounting. Ryan graduated from UPEI in 2005 with a Bachelor of Business Administration-Cooperative Education degree with a certificate in Accounting and a minor in Economics. He was the recipient of several awards while at UPEI including the Certified General Accountants of PEI Prize, the Institute of Chartered Accountants Auditing Prize and Accounting Prize, the Society of Management Accountants of PEI Award, the Owen F. Mullin Prize, and the Rundell Seaman Award for the highest overall academic standing in the 2005 graduating class. Having achieved his Chartered Accountant designation in 2007, Ryan is a partner at MacPherson Roche Smith and Associates.
Patrick Joseph McDonald Memorial Award
The Patrick Joseph McDonald Memorial Award is granted to an undergraduate student who is normally resident in Canada and enrolled in full-time study in the Faculty of Sustainable Design Engineering, Business (business administration), or Faculty of Arts (majoring in economics). The award is provided to the student in the greatest financial need, with preference given to students normally resident in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, or Newfoundland and Labrador. This award was established by Hugh McDonald in memory of his father, Patrick Joseph McDonald, BBA '93 at UPEI, who had a distinguished career in project management and information technology with the Government of Canada. Patrick worked for three Prime Ministers' Offices and two Clerks of Privy Council Offices and spoke internationally on information technology applications. He received many awards for his professional abilities and community involvement before passing away on October 14, 2023.
Passion for Life Award in Memory of Rene Ayangma
The Passion for Life Award in Memory of Rene Ayangma is awarded to a UPEI student involved in Panther Sport who exemplifies the qualities of Rene Ayangma and who demonstrates desire and enthusiasm toward Panther Sport. This award was created by UPEI Panther Athletes in memory of Rene Ayangma who died during his third year at UPEI. Rene was a sports enthusiast and former Panther who excelled at a number of sports. His personal qualities and love of life were felt by all that knew him. The Passion for Life Award is established to recognize all Panther athletes who pass away during their time as a UPEI student.
Parks and People Association Scholarships
Granted to returning SSDE students who are normally resident in Canada, and have a demonstrated interest in protecting the Island environment through the development of sustainable design initiatives. The number of scholarships available will be determined by the available expenditure each year with a minimum of $1,000 each. Founded in 1981, Parks and People Association Inc. is a non-profit, charitable organization that promotes awareness, appreciation and conservation of the National Park and National Historic Sites of Prince Edward Island. In 2017 the directors recognized that the life of the Association was coming to an end with a reduced membership base and much of what they had set out to do achieved. The Association decided to use the remaining funds they had raised to support scholarships at the University of Prince Edward Island and Holland College. This endowed fund provides support in perpetuity to UPEI students who have an expressed interest in the environment and sustainable design. Beginning in academic year 2018/19, these scholarships are granted to returning UPEI students who are normally resident in Canada, have a demonstrated interest in protecting the Island environment through the development of sustainable design initiatives, and are a student in the School of Sustainable Design Engineering (SSDE) program.
Paramedic Association of PEI Award
The Paramedic Association of PEI Award is an annual award established in the Fall of 2020 to support students enrolled in the Bachelor of Science in Paramedicine program at the University of Prince Edward Island. This award recognizes the financial needs of full-time students pursuing their education in paramedicine while promoting higher education in the field. The award was established by the Paramedic Association of Prince Edward Island (PAPEI), a voluntary professional organization incorporated in 2009 that serves as the sole representation of the province's professional paramedic body with over 160 members. As a chapter of the Paramedic Association of Canada, PAPEI is unified with over 20,000 paramedics from across the country. The award reflects PAPEI's commitment to empowering paramedics of PEI as national leaders in the profession and supporting the advancement of paramedicine through educational opportunities.
Parabolic Sand Dunes Award
The Parabolic Sand Dunes Award is granted each year to a returning student in undergraduate studies majoring in Environmental Studies at UPEI. The successful recipient will have a demonstrated knowledge and appreciation for the impact that climate change is having on Prince Edward Island and beyond. This award was established by the Sanderson family to honor their parents, Cyril and Daisy Sanderson, who raised three sons on a family farm in Greenwich, Prince Edward Island, which comprised one of North America's rarest sand dune formations—the internationally recognized Greenwich parabolic sand dunes. Each of the sons was brought up with a healthy respect for the farming and agriculture industry while appreciating the importance and delicate nature of ensuring that endangered areas such as the parabolic sand dunes were respected and protected. The Sanderson parents were keenly aware of the significance of a post-secondary education, and their sons—J. Brian Sanderson (BSc. '71), Kevin Sanderson (BSc. '75), and Dana Sanderson (BBA '84)—are all alumni of the University of Prince Edward Island. They have established this award to support UPEI students who will continue the important work of protecting the environment.
Owen F. Mullin Prize
The Owen F. Mullin Prize is awarded annually to the student with the highest aggregate in Corporate Finance and Integrated Cases in Corporate Finance at the University of Prince Edward Island's Faculty of Business. This award recognizes academic excellence in finance-related courses and is supported by Owen Mullin, a St. Dunstan's graduate from 1949 who has been a generous supporter of UPEI at many levels. Mr. Mullin, who was President of TEKSIGN INC. in Mississauga, Ontario, has stated that 'It is the responsibility of those of us who benefit from a university education to contribute to its financial welfare.' The prize demonstrates his commitment to supporting current students and investing in the future of the university.
Orwell Corner Historic Village Prize
The Orwell Corner Historic Village Prize is an annual award established by the Orwell Corner Historic Village in recognition of excellence in Island history research. This prize is awarded to a student who is judged to have the best essay in an Island history course which relies primarily on oral sources. Preference is given to events that have occurred in southeastern Prince Edward Island. The award recognizes outstanding scholarly work that utilizes oral history methods to document and preserve the history of the Island community. This prize honors the tradition of the Orwell Corner Historic Village, which opened in July 1973 and represents the late nineteenth-century crossroads community founded by early Scottish settlers, Irish families, and United Empire Loyalists. The village site is currently owned by the Province of Prince Edward Island and administered by the Prince Edward Island Museum and Heritage Foundation and the Orwell Corner Pioneer Village Corporation.
