Selma Jeanne Cohen Prize in Dance Aesthetics

American Society for Aesthetics

The Selma Jeanne Cohen Prize in Dance Aesthetics is a $1000 biennial prize established by the American Society for Aesthetics in memory of Selma Jeanne Cohen and with gratitude for her generous bequest to the ASA. The prize recognizes published work of distinction in English that contributes to dance aesthetics, dance theory, or the history of dance. Eligible publications must have appeared in reputable peer reviewed venues and be permanently available to the scholarly community. Commencing with the 2020 competition, ASA membership as of the date of the submission deadline is required for all nominees. Self-nominations are welcome, and co-authored works are eligible, with the prize and travel support divided equally among co-authors. Nominations are judged based on significance of the topic or issue, quality of research and writing, originality, and contribution to dance literature. Eligible publications include refereed articles from recognized journals, original chapters or essays in anthologies, and published refereed monographs of original scholarship. Collections of previously published work, anthologies by multiple authors, and translations are not eligible.
