Ruth Isabelle (Bull) Elliott Nursing Scholarship

University of Prince Edward Island

This annual scholarship is awarded to a full-time returning nursing student who is in good academic standing and has demonstrated interest in pursuing a career in the mental health field. The recipient must be a resident of a maritime province, with preference given to a resident of New Brunswick. The scholarship was established by Victoria Ruth Isabelle Elliott to honour her beloved grandmother's dedication to and respect for the field of Nursing. Ruth Isabelle Elliott was a graduate of Victoria Public Hospital in Fredericton, New Brunswick in 1948, and practiced nursing in the United States and Canada during her early career. After residing in PEI since 1957, she continued to practice nursing part-time and volunteered with the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Meals on Wheels, her church and local schools while raising her four children. The scholarship commemorates Ruth's lifelong commitment to nursing and the fond recollections of her nursing career that were shared in family stories throughout her life.

Rory Beck Outstanding Academic and Athletic Leadership Award

University of Prince Edward Island

Awarded to the graduating student who has displayed the most outstanding dedication to athletics, academics, leadership and campus spirit throughout the undergraduate studies. Roderick Laughlin Beck, Rory to all who knew him, was one of those rare individuals who touched the lives of so many people through his professional careers, sports involvement and personal life. His career spanned both federal and provincial governments, most notably with the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, Service Canada and as Clerk of the Executive Council in the Office of the Premier of Prince Edward Island. He was also remembered as a friend and leader in sports, particularly in hockey circles. Rory died suddenly of natural causes in April 2012 at the age of 54. In memory of his life and legacy, friends and family have created this award to honour Rory's passion for sports and his belief that education and community service were critical components of a meaningful life.

Robert "Rocky" Paquet Memorial Award

The Robert "Rocky" Paquet Memorial Award is granted to a returning student at the University of Prince Edward Island who has volunteered in the university or broader community and loves music and animals. Preference will be given to a student who demonstrates a history of enriching the UPEI campus through activities and volunteerism. This award commemorates Robert "Rocky" Paquet, who was a valued employee of UPEI for 26 years and had an immeasurable impact on students through his compassion, kindness, and dedication. Rocky was known for cooking hotdogs for students during his lunch, handing out popsicles, and preparing meals for nearly 700 students during exam week. He was voted UPEI Staff of the Year in 2014 and received the President's Recognition Award of Merit for Campus Spirit in 2013. Rocky had a love for music and animals, particularly his canine companions, and was known for his generous nature and ability to bring the campus community together.

R.G. Thomson Academic Achievement Medal

Professor Don MacEwen SSDE Inspirational Award

Awarded to a student graduating from the Bachelor of Science in Sustainable Design Engineering who is an inspiration to classmates; demonstrates academic excellence and exceptional engagement in project-based design; and has shown the highest ethical standards as demonstrated by Professor MacEwen over his many years of outstanding teaching and engineering practice. This award recognizes Professor Don MacEwen's 40 years of exemplary teaching at UPEI and his dedication to engineering education. Professor MacEwen has been instrumental in developing Canadian engineering standards, ethics guidelines, and professional qualifications, while serving as a beloved mentor to generations of engineering students. The award was established in 2017 upon his retirement to honor his legacy of inspiring students to excellence in both technical competence and ethical practice in the engineering profession.

The Peter J. Tremblay Memorial Award is presented to a returning Panther athlete in good academic standing who has demonstrated exceptional dedication to their sport and shown involvement in campus life. The award recognizes the most well-rounded athlete among returning student-athletes at the University of Prince Edward Island. This award is supported by the Panther Athletes Endowment Fund, which was established at UPEI to support Panther Athletic Financial Awards. The creation of this fund was made possible through many generous gifts, including a significant estate gift from the late Peter J. Tremblay (BBA '75) and a contribution from Compass Group. The award celebrates the legacy of Peter J. Tremblay while supporting student-athletes who excel both in their sport and in their broader campus community engagement.
