Barb Mullaly Memorial Athletic Award

University of Prince Edward Island

The Barb Mullaly Memorial Athletic Award is granted to a returning Academic All-Canadian student athlete in their first undergraduate studies program who displays a positive attitude and the qualities of leadership and mentorship that Barb exhibited throughout her university career in education. The recipient will informally mentor a first year athlete, with preference given to a female varsity athlete. This award honors Barbara (Barb) C. Mullaly, a bright light, mentor, volunteer, teacher, traveller, partner, sister, and friend who had a profound effect on the world of academics and athletics. Her four-decade career at UPEI began in 1967 at Prince of Wales College, where she served as the first women's basketball and field hockey coach, eventually serving 13 years as director of athletics, and then retiring as the first Director of Wellness and Fair Treatment Advocate in 2006. Barb understood and respected the competitive nature of sport but felt strongly that every student athlete needed to focus on academics as well to reach their full potential. She was nationally recognized with numerous awards including the CIS Austin-Matthews Award in 2007 for outstanding service to university sport in Canada. Barb passed away December 10, 2016, and this award was created by her friends and family, former students and colleagues to honor her memory and legacy of mentorship and leadership.

Austin A. Scales Scholarships

University of Prince Edward Island

The Austin A. Scales Scholarships are awarded to students from rural Prince Edward Island, one from each county, based on financial need and achievement in the first year of a university program. Available to second-year students only. The scholarships were established through a bequest in the Will of Austin Scales, a Maritime entrepreneur who was a pioneering business leader in agriculture, electric power generation, and the silver fox industry. Born in 1886 on a modest farm in St. Eleanor's, PEI, Austin Scales went on to become a recognized Canadian business leader, serving as Director of the Bank of Nova Scotia and past Chairman of Industrial Enterprises Inc. He also served as Chairman of the Board of Prince County Hospital and received an honorary doctorate degree from UPEI in 1972. Mr. Scales died in 1989, leaving a bequest to establish these scholarships in perpetuity.
