Percy and Helen Murphy Memorial Scholarship
The Percy and Helen Murphy Memorial Scholarship is awarded to an incoming high school student from Souris Regional School with the highest academic average based on courses used for admission. In the case of two equally qualifying candidates, preference will be given to a student entering the Faculty of Science if possible. This scholarship was established at the University of Prince Edward Island in memory of Percy and Helen (Mooney) Murphy of Elmira, PEI, created by their daughter Joan (Murphy) Duffy and her husband Regis Duffy in respect and appreciation of the Murphy's commitment to family and lifelong learning. The scholarship may be renewed for second, third, and fourth year based on the same eligibility requirements and scholarship values as established for UPEI's Celebrating Student Achievement program. Helen attended St. Mary's convent and obtained her teacher's license at Prince of Wales College in 1928, teaching at various schools before marrying Percy Murphy. Percy worked on the C.N. Railway for thirty-five years and together they ran the P.J. Murphy General Store in Elmira.
