PEI's Famous Five Graduating Student Award
Beginning in May 2019, the PEI's Famous Five Graduating Student Award will be granted to a graduating student who has held a leadership role while a student at UPEI and/or plans to pursue a career in politics. Preference will be given to women students. This award honours five women who, in 1993, held five of the most influential positions in the province of Prince Edward Island: Premier Catherine Callbeck, Leader of the Opposition Pat Mella, Speaker of the House Nancy Guptill, Lieutenant Governor Marion Reid, and Deputy Premier Elizabeth Libbe Hubley. This was the first and last time in Canadian history that five women held these positions simultaneously. The award is established to encourage the next generation of women political leaders and is aligned with the work of the PEI Coalition for Women in Government, which works to increase women's leadership at all levels of government.
PEI Retired Teachers' Association Graduation Prize
The PEI Retired Teachers' Association Graduation Prize is awarded to a graduating student in the Bachelor of Education program who demonstrates a high degree of competence and ability in preparing and presenting learning materials to students in a classroom setting. The award is specifically for students who have graduated from a Prince Edward Island high school. The PEI Retired Teachers' Association (PEIRTA) has been in existence for decades with primary objectives to assist its members in staying abreast of developments in education, maintaining professional contacts, and meeting with government regarding improved terms for retired teachers. Members of the PEIRTA act as volunteers in their communities, host many activities and provide financial support to future teachers through scholarships and awards.
Paul "Ryan" Pineau Award
The Paul "Ryan" Pineau Award is presented to the graduating student who has achieved the highest mark in Accounting 4310, Income Taxation, at the University of Prince Edward Island School of Business. This award was established by Ryan Pineau as a tribute to his commitment to university studies and the field of accounting. Ryan graduated from UPEI in 2005 with a Bachelor of Business Administration-Cooperative Education degree with a certificate in Accounting and a minor in Economics. He was the recipient of several awards while at UPEI including the Certified General Accountants of PEI Prize, the Institute of Chartered Accountants Auditing Prize and Accounting Prize, the Society of Management Accountants of PEI Award, the Owen F. Mullin Prize, and the Rundell Seaman Award for the highest overall academic standing in the 2005 graduating class. Having achieved his Chartered Accountant designation in 2007, Ryan is a partner at MacPherson Roche Smith and Associates.
Pathology Achievement Award
The Pathology Achievement Award is presented to the graduating student in Veterinary Medicine at the Atlantic Veterinary College (AVC) who demonstrates proficiency and aptitude in pathology. This award recognizes outstanding academic achievement and skill in the field of veterinary pathology among fourth-year DVM students. The award is designed to honor students who have excelled in their pathology studies and shown exceptional promise in this critical area of veterinary medicine.
Oscar Honeyman Yarrow Award
The Oscar Honeyman Yarrow Award is a scholarship opportunity offered by the University of Prince Edward Island's Atlantic Veterinary College. This award recognizes and supports graduating students in the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) program who demonstrate excellence in professional practice and compassionate patient care. The award is presented to a fourth-year veterinary medicine student who exemplifies outstanding professional skills and demonstrates a deep understanding of effective and compassionate communication with clients. Additionally, the recipient must show an exceptional commitment to the care of critically ill animals, reflecting the highest standards of veterinary medicine practice.
Nova Scotia Poultry Industry Excellence Award in Diseases of Poultry
Beginning in academic year 2024-2025, this award will be granted to a graduating student selected/recommended by the AVC faculty who completed their full secondary education at a Nova Scotia High School, excelled in the fourth-year course "Diseases of Poultry", and has a declared/demonstrated interest in poultry medicine in Nova Scotia. If no Nova Scotia student is eligible, students from the other Maritime provinces, and then from outside the Maritimes, who meet the other criteria may be considered. The poultry industry in Nova Scotia is a thriving, sustainable sector that is expected to contribute to the province's rural economies for years to come. Poultry farmers rely on veterinarians to help them maintain healthy flocks and meet stringent national animal care and food safety requirements. The Nova Scotia Feather Boards (Chicken Farmers of Nova Scotia, Egg Farmers of Nova Scotia, Hatching Egg Farmers of Nova Scotia, and Turkey Farmers of Nova Scotia) have established these awards to acknowledge the valuable role poultry veterinarians play within our industry and create awareness among veterinary students of the opportunities available in poultry medicine.
Noel MacAleer Award
The Noel MacAleer Award is presented annually to a graduating student from the Engineering class at the University of Prince Edward Island who displays the positive attributes and qualities of the late Noel MacAleer. The award recognizes students who demonstrate qualities of leadership, motivation, and team spirit through class involvement. Noel MacAleer entered the Engineering Program at UPEI in 1977 and became extremely well-liked and respected by his classmates for his enthusiasm, generosity, and natural leadership ability. An excellent hockey player, Noel's leadership shone on the ice, in the dressing room, and in the classroom. He was known for his genuine desire to make other people happy and his ability to inspire those around him. The award was established by the UPEI Engineering Class of 1979 in tribute to their classmate, whose life was ended prematurely by cancer. This award honors students who embody the same spirit of teamwork, leadership, and positive engagement that characterized Noel's time at UPEI.
Mrs. W. Chester McLure Memorial Awards
The Mrs. W. Chester McLure Memorial Awards are presented annually to graduating students in the Bachelor of Science program with concentrations in Family Science or Foods and Nutrition at the University of Prince Edward Island. Two awards are given: a first-place award of $500 and a second-place award of $300. The awards are named in honor of Lt. Col. Honourable W. Chester S. McLure, who was a distinguished Member of Parliament for Queens constituency, elected in 1930, 1945, and 1949. He also served three terms in the PEI Legislature during the 1920s and had notable roles as a teacher, businessman in the fox industry, president of the Guardian Publishing Company, and director of the Charlottetown Exhibition Association. Recipients are selected by the university's Scholarships and Awards Committee based on academic performance and standing within their program.
Merck Animal Health Small Animal Internal Medicine Award
The Merck Animal Health Small Animal Internal Medicine Award is presented annually to a graduating student in Veterinary Medicine at the Atlantic Veterinary College (AVC) at the University of Prince Edward Island. This award recognizes exceptional academic performance and clinical proficiency in small animal internal medicine. The award provides financial recognition to support outstanding veterinary students who have demonstrated excellence in this specialized area of veterinary practice. Recipients are selected based on their achievements throughout their veterinary medicine program, with particular emphasis on their mastery of small animal internal medicine concepts, clinical skills, and overall performance in this critical discipline.
Merck Animal Health Award in Bovine Theriogenology
The Merck Animal Health Award in Bovine Theriogenology is a scholarship awarded to a graduating student in Veterinary Medicine at the Atlantic Veterinary College (AVC) who demonstrates excellence in bovine theriogenology during senior clinical rotations. This award recognizes outstanding academic performance and clinical skills in the specialized field of bovine reproductive medicine. The scholarship provides $500 to support graduating veterinary medicine students who have shown exceptional ability in this important area of large animal veterinary practice.
Marylou Hughes Scholarship
The Marylou Hughes Scholarship is awarded to full-time graduating students in good academic standing who have demonstrated aptitude in their chosen field of study and have been accepted into an accredited professional school or graduate program. The scholarship prioritizes students entering programs in the following order: Audiology, Medicine, or research in the medical field. This scholarship was established by Marylou Hughes, an active alumna, volunteer, and donor at the University of Prince Edward Island. Marylou was one of the first mature females to graduate from UPEI with a B.Sc., maintaining her status on the Dean's list while serving as a leader and mentor. She went on to a profession in Audiology and continues to contribute to the Island community through research and clinical practice devoted to hearing disorders, assessment, hearing conservation, and aural rehabilitation. The scholarship reflects her consistent spirit of giving and commitment to supporting students pursuing healthcare and medical research careers.
