The Bach Fellowship for the Study of Legislative Assemblies and Democratic Governance

University of Chicago

The Bach Fellowship is intended to facilitate dissertation research to improve the understanding of national legislative assemblies and democratic governance. The Fellowship Award each year is expected to be approximately $50,000. The Bach Fellowship honors the life and work of Stanley I. Bach, who, as a Senior Specialist in the Legislative Process at the Congressional Research Service, educated Members of Congress and their staff on House and Senate rules through written products, seminars, and personal consultations. Dr. Bach directed that after his death his assets be used to create a fellowship to fund one year of doctoral dissertation research and writing for advanced graduate students at the University of Chicago or Yale University, his two alma maters. Strong applicants will propose studies about political action within legislative institutions, the politics of inter-branch and governing coalitions, the policy-making context in which legislatures or their organs operate, or the activity of political actors who influence or respond to legislative actions.

Catherine Hinman Memorial Fellowship

Silverado Policy Accelerator

The Catherine Hinman Memorial Fellowship was established in 2023 to create career pathways for graduate students from across the country to pursue public policy careers. Entering its fourth year in the Summer of 2026, the Fellowship is open to graduate students with backgrounds in economics, applied sciences, and international affairs with little or no prior experience working and living in Washington DC. Silverado helps these students gain practical professional experience and build a network in Washington DC. Fellows develop technical writing and research skills, become immersed in federal and international policy-making, and sow the seeds of career growth for years to come. The Catherine Hinman Memorial Fellowship is hosted by the Silverado Policy Accelerator, a bipartisan geopolitical think tank focused on American prosperity and global competitiveness through investment in economic, strategic, and technological policy solutions. Silverado introduces Fellows to multiple career paths by facilitating networking with DC-based professionals from across the U.S. Government, non-profit organizations, business, and academia. Throughout the course of the Fellowship, each Fellow completes a final research project based on their area of interest.
