Funding Opportunities

Noah Greenberg Award

The Noah Greenberg Award was established by the Trustees of the New York Pro Musica Antiqua in memory of their founder and first director. The award is intended as a grant-in-aid to stimulate active cooperation between scholars and performers by recognizing and fostering outstanding contributions to historical performing practices. Both scholars and performers may apply, since the Award may subsidize the publication costs of articles, monographs, or editions, as well as public performance, recordings, or other projects. The award supports projects that engage with classic song and are intended for publication, including traditional works such as articles, books, and editions, as well as digital resources. Applicants need not be members of the American Musicological Society.

Career Development Grants in American Music

The Career Development Grants in American Music program provides grants of $800 and complimentary Annual Meeting registration to students and educators who have a special interest in American music. The purpose of the program is to support participation in Annual Meeting programming that deepens participants' knowledge of American music and strengthens professional networks. Grant recipients will participate in relevant activities at the upcoming AMS Annual Meeting in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Selected grantees will receive complimentary registration for the 2025 AMS-SMT Joint Annual Meeting and will be required to attend at least six sessions on the American Music track, as well as specified cohort activities, over the course of the Annual Meeting. This program is designed for educators at all levels (K-12 and higher education) and students currently enrolled in bachelor's, master's, or doctoral programs who demonstrate an interest in American music.

AMS Explore

As part of the Society's new AMS Explore initiative, the AMS Education Committee invites proposals from current or recent undergraduates for 10-minute paper presentations to be delivered during the AMS-SMT Joint Annual Meeting. AMS Explore is aimed at facilitating the involvement of current and recent undergraduate students in the AMS Annual Meeting. Accepted participants will present their research as part of a symposium consisting of papers given by other members of the AMS Explore cohort. Papers will take the form of 10-minute presentations, followed by a panel discussion and general Q&A. In addition to presenting, participants in the AMS Explore program will be required to participate in cohort activities with peers and members of the AMS Education Committee that better prepare them for conference presentation and help them get as much as possible out of their conference experience. The AMS Explore program is an excellent way for undergraduates and early-career scholars to be introduced to the AMS community, receive constructive feedback on their work, and enjoy a welcoming conference experience. Accepted participants will receive complimentary registration and a $350 grant to defray the cost of travel. Free lodging (with a roommate) in the conference hotel will also be provided.

Annual Meeting Travel Grants

The American Musicological Society offers Annual Meeting Travel Grants to AMS members who have little or no financial support for travel to participate in the annual meeting of the Society. The purpose of these grants is to aid non-affiliated scholars and those with institutional appointments but little or no financial support for conference travel. Grants are available during years when the annual meeting is held in person and are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. Two levels of funding are available: up to $350 for applicants traveling from within North America and up to $500 for applicants traveling from outside North America. The grants are open to AMS members attending the annual meeting for any purpose, including presenting papers or performances, chairing sessions, serving on committees, or simply attending without appearing on the program. Graduate students are also eligible if their home institution is unable to provide sufficient support. Additionally, current undergraduate and terminal master's degree students pursuing an MA, MFA, or Masters of Music enrolled at U.S. or Canadian universities are eligible for a supplemental grant of $500 in addition to the standard travel grant, for a total of up to $850. The AMS will also assist recipients of supplemental funding in securing accommodations at the annual meeting. Students applying for the supplemental grant are not required to be AMS members. Applicants are eligible even if they have received a grant in the past, though awards are given preferentially to those who have not received funding in the previous year. The grant does not include a waiver of the Annual Meeting registration fee. Eligible individuals may apply for multiple forms of AMS annual meeting travel support but may only receive one type of funding.

Annual Meeting Registration Waivers

During years when the AMS annual meeting is held online, the American Musicological Society offers Annual Meeting Registration Waivers to international applicants from countries with a per-capita Gross Domestic Product (GDP) below $41,000. These waivers are intended to support annual meeting attendance by individuals for whom a U.S. dollar-denominated registration fee may present an unduly high financial barrier given the prevailing wages and prices in their home countries. Recipients of Annual Meeting Registration Waivers will receive full waivers of the annual meeting registration fee. Applicants from eligible countries who are accepted to present at the annual meeting will automatically receive an Annual Meeting Registration Waiver. Remaining waivers will be awarded by lottery. Applicants do not need to be presenting at the annual meeting to be eligible. The waivers are only offered during years when the AMS annual meeting is held fully online.

Guest Speaker Fund

The Guest Speaker Fund is a special fund established by the American Musicological Society to advance interdisciplinary collaboration by providing financial support to AMS committees and study groups that invite speakers from outside the field of musicology to participate in the AMS annual meeting. The fund aims to foster interdisciplinary collaboration and incorporate insights and perspectives from many disciplines into the annual meeting sessions. All invited guest speakers must be vetted by the Committee on the Annual Meeting and Public Events. Grants of up to $1,500 are available to provide travel expenses (airfare, meals, lodging, etc.) and honorarium for each invited guest speaker. Guest speakers may also be given complimentary conference registration if requested. For online annual meetings, travel costs will only be covered if the guest speaker is traveling to participate in an in-person event organized as part of the annual meeting. Applications are submitted through a separate proposal submission process from the annual meeting itself. The application deadline (mid-January) is earlier than the AMS committee/study group proposal deadline (mid-March). Applications must include a narrative description of the session, a budget for how the funds will be expended, and a CV for the proposed guest speaker.

Chapter Activities Fund

The Chapter Activities Fund provides partial support for chapter activities and programs organized by AMS chapters. This fund offers semi-annual awards to help chapters organize events and programs that benefit their membership and the broader musicological community. Awards are made twice yearly, with summer and winter application cycles. The fund is designed to supplement, not replace, chapter funding sources and supports a variety of activities including speaker events, programs, and chapter-organized gatherings. Chapters can request up to $500, which can cover no more than 50% of the total project costs. Eligible expenses include speaker fees, venue costs, travel, lodging, supplies, and direct program costs such as audio-visual equipment, catering, and other event-related expenses. Funds must be used within 12 months of the award date for the purposes outlined in the proposal, and any unused funds must be returned to the AMS. This funding opportunity is restricted to duly elected representatives of AMS chapters and can only be awarded to a given chapter once within any twelve-month period.
