Somaesthetics Research Prize

The Somaesthetics Research Prize is awarded by the American Society for Aesthetics to recognize and encourage continued research in somaesthetics. The interdisciplinary field of somaesthetics is understood broadly as the critical study and meliorative cultivation of the experience and performance of the living body (or soma) as a site of sensory appreciation (aesthesis) and creative self-stylization. Contributions exploring the field of somaesthetics through one or more of the many disciplines that already inform this field are welcome, including philosophy, aesthetics, arts and design research, technology studies, somatic, health, sports, and social sciences, history, physiology, psychology and pedagogy. Eligible submissions include newly published journal articles or book chapters within the eligible time period that are published in peer-reviewed venues recognized by the scholarly community. The prize winner receives $1,000 and is encouraged to attend the ASA meeting with travel expenses provided. Nominations are judged based on adherence to scholarly standards of writing and demonstrated knowledge of somaesthetics scholarship.

Outstanding Monograph Prize

The American Society for Aesthetics awards an annual prize for an outstanding monograph in the philosophy of art or aesthetics that was published in the previous calendar year. The selection is made by a committee appointed by the ASA President, with members remaining anonymous. Anyone may nominate a book, and self-nominations are encouraged. The review of books by the committee commences in the spring of each year. The prize recognizes exceptional scholarly achievement in aesthetics and the philosophy of art through book-length publications. Winners represent diverse approaches to aesthetics, from historical scholarship to contemporary philosophical analysis. The award honors contributions that advance the field of aesthetics and demonstrate outstanding scholarly merit. The prize includes both a monetary award of $1000 and reasonable travel expenses to attend the ASA annual meeting, where the prize is announced. This recognition provides winners with visibility within the aesthetics community and the opportunity to present their work at a major professional gathering.

Arthur Danto/American Society for Aesthetics Prize

The American Philosophical Association and the American Society for Aesthetics jointly offer the Arthur Danto/American Society for Aesthetics Prize, which recognizes outstanding published work in aesthetics in honor of the late Arthur Danto, a past-president of the APA-Eastern Division. The prize is awarded to a member of both the APA and ASA for the best paper in the field of aesthetics, broadly understood, published in a refereed journal, or an original book chapter or original essay published in a collection with multiple contributors. The award is presented in even-numbered years. In addition to the prize award, the ASA provides travel support to the winner if that person has no other access to travel funds that could be used for the meeting during the academic year of prize receipt. The travel funds are determined solely on the basis of financial need, not the perceived merit of the paper. Selection of the winner and the commentators for the symposium is made jointly by representatives from the ASA and the APA with expertise in aesthetics.

ASA Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship

The American Society for Aesthetics awards up to two Doctoral Dissertation Fellowships each academic year. These fellowships are intended to support original and significant research in aesthetics by enabling the recipient to complete his or her dissertation in a timely manner. For the purpose of this fellowship, aesthetics is understood to include the philosophical study of art, criticism, each of the arts, and related phenomena. Fellowships are open to doctoral candidates at institutions located in North America who reasonably anticipate completion of their dissertations during the fellowship year. The fellowship tenure may be carried out in residence at the fellow's home institution or at another appropriate site for the research. The fellowship provides $30,000, in addition to fees and dissertation-level tuition not exceeding $5,000. The $5,000 in support for tuition and fees is also available for travel to present work at the four ASA Division meetings, if sufficient funds remain after payment of tuition and fees. Recipients shall not normally hold employment during the tenure of the fellowship and may not accept other awards that provide similar benefits, except that smaller local awards may be permitted at the discretion of the Society.
