About This Opportunity

The Breakthrough Opportunity Bursary for New Immigrants is a scholarship program supporting new refugees or immigrants to Canada who are completing grade 12 at Calgary Board of Education schools. The bursary is designed to assist students who have arrived in Canada within the last five years and are transitioning to post-secondary education or trades/vocational programs. Two awards are available annually, with students pursuing trades and vocational programs strongly encouraged to apply. Applicants must demonstrate financial need and have academic grades sufficient for admission to their chosen area of study, though academic achievement is not the primary determining factor. The application process requires students to share their personal story in approximately 500 words, describing their arrival to Canada, challenges experienced with learning in their new environment, involvement in their new Canadian life, and their future plans. One letter of reference from a school official, employer, or community leader is also required. The award is tenable at any eligible post-secondary institution or program in Canada. Recipients must be registered in a program of at least two years duration, or an eligible skilled trades or apprenticeship program, within eighteen months of high school graduation. Selection is determined with equal consideration given to financial need, the applicant's personal story, and the reference letter. Recipients are selected and notified by the end of December or early January. For continued funding in the second year, award holders must maintain marks sufficient for continued enrollment and be registered in a full-time course load. Recipients must submit transcripts with proof of enrollment no later than three months after the beginning of each semester. Students who receive other awards exceeding $10,000 (excluding Alexander Rutherford or non-competitive entrance awards) and international fee-paying students are not eligible to apply.
