About this opportunity

The Early Independence Clinician Scientist Fellowship supports talented clinically active researchers who have gained a higher research degree (PhD or equivalent) and have evidence of career consolidation and productivity across past appointments. The fellowship aims to help clinician scientists lead their own research plans to establish their own research niche, start to build their own research team, and make the first step-change towards independence. This fellowship is offered through the Medical Research Council (MRC) as part of UK Research and Innovation's Fellowship Investment Framework. Applications are welcomed from across all areas of MRC's remit to improve human health, ranging from basic studies with relevance to mechanisms of disease to translational and developmental clinical research. Science areas include infections and immunity, molecular and cellular medicine, population and systems medicine, neurosciences and mental health, translation, global health, methodology, and public health. The fellowship provides support for up to five years (pro rata for part-time fellowships) and covers the fellow's salary along with project costs at 80% of full economic cost. Additional funding is available for research and technical staff, visa fees, research consumables, equipment, travel costs, training activities, and a period of research overseas or at a second UK organization. Joint funding opportunities are available with collaborating organizations including Diabetes UK, Kidney Research UK, Parkinson's UK, and others.
