About This Opportunity

Awarded to a Nursing student who, in the second year of the Nursing program, has demonstrated clinical excellence in the care of children and families while maintaining an average of at least 75% in the two Nursing courses of that year (N213 and N223). This prize is established at the University of Prince Edward Island by Eileen and Lawson Drake. Eileen (Jay) Drake completed Second Year at Prince of Wales College (PWC) in 1950 and graduated from the Prince Edward Island Hospital School of Nursing in 1953, being awarded the prize in Pediatric Nursing. Lawson Drake graduated from PWC in 1948 and from McGill University in 1950, receiving his Master's degree from Cornell University in 1959 and PhD from Dalhousie University in 1969. He became the first Chair of the Biology Department at UPEI and served as Dean of Science from 1985 to 1991, chairing the Nursing Education Transition Committee that established the School of Nursing at UPEI. The Drakes believe that the nursing care of infants and children demands special qualities of professionalism, compassion, and commitment, and established this prize to encourage the development of these qualities in student nurses demonstrating excellence in child and family care.
