About this opportunity
The G. Louise Hessian Renewable Entrance Scholarship is granted to a student entering their first undergraduate degree program from a secondary school who is in financial need and has demonstrated good academic standing during their high school education. If there are two equally qualifying candidates, financial need will take precedence. Pending successful completion of the first year of study, this scholarship will be renewable for each subsequent year of the student's enrollment at UPEI for a maximum total of four years, provided that a satisfactory academic standing is maintained with an overall average of 75% in the first year of study, and an overall average of 80% in the subsequent three years of study, while carrying a full-time course load of 10 courses (30 semester-hours of credit) over the academic year (September to August). If for any reason the successful candidate should discontinue studies at UPEI, and therefore lose eligibility for renewal of this scholarship, another candidate - entering the same year of study that the original recipient would have been entering - will be chosen. The scholarship was established by Louise Hessian, who earned a diploma in special education and spent 44 years teaching in the Charlottetown school system. The Hessian family was originally from Georgetown, and Louise's father, James Hessian, an engineer for CN Railways, was killed in the 1932 Tignish train wreck.
