About This Opportunity
This opportunity invites researchers to apply to attend an interactive sandpit to co-develop research projects that develop, validate, and critique novel scientometric indicators for use in research assessment and in future metascience research. The sandpit aims to address the growing need for new measures of research excellence and impact that go beyond traditional citation-based metrics, leveraging advances in artificial intelligence and machine learning. The focus is on developing scientometric indicators for three key areas: evaluation of research portfolios, individual programme or project-level evaluation, and metascience research where standardised measures are needed for consistent comparison. The sandpit will take place over four days (two days in-person at UKRI Swindon on 15-16 April 2026, and remotely on 21 April and 23 April 2026) and will bring together scientometric experts to collaboratively develop research project proposals. The intensive workshop will be led by the UK Metascience Unit with support from mentors and stakeholders. Participants will work together to define challenges, share expertise, use creative thinking techniques, and develop highly innovative research projects that will pitch for funding on the final day. The intention is to fund 12-month research projects that deliver actionable findings, including the development of new open-access indicators and measures that can be readily implemented by research funders, policymakers and other users. Up to £3 million is available at 80% full economic cost for all research projects arising from the sandpit. The opportunity is open to UK organisations with standard eligibility, as well as business, third sector, government organisations, and international applicants (with restrictions). Attendance at the entire sandpit is mandatory for selected participants. Applicants must complete an expression of interest online survey by 26 February 2026.
