About This Opportunity

The Ruth and Oswald L Kraus Innovator-in-Residence Scholarship is a biennial scholarship that supports a one-trimester student residency at Wai-te-ata Press at Victoria University of Wellington. The scholarship was established in honor of Ruth and Oz Kraus, founders of Brick Row Publishing, who specialized in literary publishing and fostered younger writers and artists in the 1980s-2000s. The successful student will explore the interface between creative writing and publishing in innovative formats using the letterpress, 3D printing, and digital facilities of the Press. Collaboration with other writers, artists, and translators is encouraged, with expected outputs including a publication, exhibition, launch, and talk. The scholarship provides a total value of $12,000 NZD (subject to funds available), split into an $8,000 stipend paid in three installments and $4,000 towards tuition fees and levies. The stipend is paid at the beginning, mid-way upon submission of a progress report, and at the end of the residency. Recipients are also eligible for Individual Directed Study course credit. Students have access to Wai-te-ata Press facilities, technical expertise, the University community, and local/international networks. Applicants must have completed at least two years of study at Victoria University of Wellington, be enrolled at the time of the residency, and/or intend to study in the following year. The residency requires 10 weeks/400 hours physically on-site at Wai-te-ata Press during Trimester Three (November to February). The successful applicant will demonstrate a professional approach to their creative practice, willingness to explore and extend current thinking, commitment to creative innovation, and evidence of successful project completion.
