About this opportunity
This scholarship honors Sam and Nina Narodowski, who migrated to Australia in 1950 as refugees. The scholarship provides financial support to undergraduate students of migrant or refugee background who are facing circumstances that impact their ability to study. The scholarship is designed to support students from non-English speaking backgrounds who have recently migrated to Australia, with priority given to current or former refugees. Sam Narodowski, born in Poland in 1920, was a Jewish student who studied electrical engineering at Warsaw University despite severe discrimination, and his studies were interrupted by World War II. His entire family was murdered by the Nazis. He met Nina in a displaced persons camp in Munich after the war. Nina was born in Vilnius in 1928, and her family fled the Nazis to Kazakhstan. They married in 1947, migrated to Australia, and built a successful knitwear business in Melbourne. Their family established this scholarship to help students facing political and racial hardships to access education.
