About this opportunity

The Te Herenga Waka Māori Doctoral Scholarship is designed to encourage and support Māori students to undertake doctoral study at Te Herenga Waka – Victoria University of Wellington. These scholarships are open to all Māori candidates who intend to enrol for a doctorate at the university. The scholarship provides comprehensive financial support to enable full-time doctoral research over a three-year period. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic achievement in combination with the applicant's previous experience and knowledge, and the strategic importance and impact of the proposed research. Applicants would normally be expected to have completed a Bachelor's or Master's degree with academic distinction equivalent to a First Class Honours degree at a New Zealand University. The scholarship comprises a $32,000 tax-free stipend per year for three years (36 months), plus full tuition fees and student levies. Applications can be submitted at any time throughout the year and are assessed on a rolling basis. Applicants will be notified of the outcome within 5 weeks of submitting a completed application. The scholarship is administered by the University Research Scholarship Committee on recommendation from a representative of the Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Māori). Recipients are expected to act as Ambassadors for Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington and participate in appropriate events or marketing if requested. The scholarship may be held in conjunction with other awards, though approval for co-tenure of awards totaling more than one-third of the scholarship stipend value may result in a reduction. Recipients must maintain full-time enrolment and devote themselves full-time to their research programme, though domestic students may apply to hold the scholarship part-time for compelling social reasons. Recipients enrolled full-time may undertake paid employment for up to 600 hours per calendar year with supervisor and Head of School approval.
