About this opportunity

The Boyle Postgraduate Scholarship in German is an annual award established by Mrs. Ita Kirwan in memory of her parents, Professor Connell Boyle (formerly Professor of Agriculture and Dean of the Faculty of Dairy Science) and Professor Mary Boyle (formerly Professor of German at UCC). This scholarship targets postgraduate students (MA and PhD) who are registered in the Department of German at University College Cork. The scholarship supports research trips to German-speaking countries to advance the applicant's research project. The funding is intended to facilitate travel for research purposes, such as gaining access to library or archival materials not available at UCC, or conducting interviews with authors about literary projects or translations. The scholarship prioritizes students who would otherwise have difficulty traveling to a German-speaking country for research purposes. The award is valued at €2,500 (subject to annual investment income variations) and is tenable for one year. Payment is made in two installments: the first before the research trip takes place, and the second following submission of a research trip report. Applicants must submit a project proposal of maximum 700 words including details of their research plans, proposed destinations, and rationale for travel to a German-speaking country.
