About This Opportunity

The P. Fitzpatrick Prize in Epidemiology and Public Health Medicine was established to perpetuate the memory of the late Patrick F. Fitzpatrick, MB, DPH, Deputy Chief Medical Officer, Cork Health Authority, who made an outstanding contribution to the control of tuberculosis in Cork City. The prize is funded by the Cork Anti-Tuberculosis Association and T. P. Mullen and Co., Ltd. The prize is awarded annually to the student(s) who obtain first place in the HC3008 'Epidemiology for Evidence Based Healthcare' module at the Summer Third University Examination in Medicine at University College Cork. The current value of the prize is approximately €400. The award recognizes academic excellence in epidemiology and public health medicine at the undergraduate level. To be eligible, candidates must have been a student at University College Cork for the two years immediately preceding the examination, must have already passed the Third University Examination in Medicine, and must have taken each module of that examination for the first time. The Academic Council must consider a sufficiently high standard to have been attained. Note that due to insufficient funding, this prize was not awarded for Academic Years 2018/19 and 2019/20. The award is funded from endowments invested by the university, with the annual income determining the award amount. Due to investment market fluctuations, the actual value may vary from year to year.
