About

Shetland Community Benefit Fund (SCBF) unites and represents communities across the Shetland islands to gain from commercial renewable energy projects. SCBF independently manages millions of pounds of community benefit funds to develop innovative projects which create lasting positive impacts all over Shetland. The organization manages the largest onshore renewable energy fund in the UK, administering £2.215 million annually from SSE Renewables' Viking Energy Wind Farm, and works closely with 18 community councils to identify and support the most beneficial community projects across the islands.

Funding Opportunities

Strategic Fund

The Strategic Fund is the primary funding stream of the Viking Community Fund, managed by the Shetland Community Benefit Fund. This fund supports one-off projects or multi-year projects that are community-focused and aimed at sustaining and developing Shetland's communities. Applications must clearly align with the fund's strategic priorities, which include encouraging younger people to stay or return to Shetland, improving transport and digital connectivity, reducing cost of living, improving housing supply and affordability, and preserving Shetland's natural environment. The fund is designed as a 'project funder' rather than core operational funding, and applicants are encouraged to seek additional funding sources for their projects. The Strategic Fund accepts applications over £10,000, with special consultation required for requests exceeding £50,000. Each organization may submit one application annually, which can cover a multi-year project period.

Community Grant Scheme (CGS)

The Community Grant Scheme provides funding for community focused or charitable activities which sustain and develop the local community, represent value for money, show community involvement and are financially viable. The scheme is divided into three tiers. Tier 1 supports applications from £50 to £1,000 with multiple applications allowed up to an annual total of £2,000. Tier 2 supports applications of £1,001 and above for projects within individual or across 3 community council areas. Tier 3 provides funding from £200 to £15,000 for Shetland-wide projects, with £135,000 allocated annually distributed across three rounds of £45,000 each. All 18 community councils in Shetland are allocated funding from the Viking Community Fund on a share basis, with five-share host areas receiving £32,575 annually and single-share areas receiving £6,515 annually. Local community council decision making applies for Tier 1 and 2, while SCBF makes decisions for Tier 3 applications.
