Michael Smith Foreign Study Supplement

The Canada Graduate Scholarships – Michael Smith Foreign Study Supplements (CGS-MSFSS) support high-calibre Canadian graduate students in building global linkages and international networks through the pursuit of exceptional research experiences at research institutions abroad. By accessing international scientific research and training, CGS-MSFSS recipients will contribute to strengthening the potential for collaboration between Canadian and foreign institutions. This supplement is available to students who hold an active Canada Graduate Scholarship at either the Master's or Doctoral level. Recipients must be registered in a graduate research studies program at a Canadian institution for the duration of their research study period abroad and must return to complete their degree at their Canadian institution.

Graduate Research Assistantship (GRA)

Graduate Research Assistantships (GRAs) support academic research at Nipissing University. Research assistantship support is administered by Research Services, the School of Graduate Studies and by faculty members who hold research grants or externally funded research contracts. GRAs provide graduate students with opportunities to work on research projects while enrolled in their graduate programs. All graduate assistantship work is considered to be diversionary from the student's main Major Research Paper (MRP) or Thesis research, and therefore graduate students are limited to a maximum of 10 hours of GTA/GRA work per week while enrolled in a full time program of studies. These payments are considered employment income by the university and tax deductions are made at source, with a T4 issued for tax purposes.

Graduate Teaching Assistantship (GTA)

Graduate students at Nipissing University may be offered a Graduate Teaching Assistantship (GTA) as part of their funding package in a given academic year. GTAs are assigned internally through the School of Graduate Studies and the corresponding graduate program. Working under the supervision of the course instructor, Graduate Teaching Assistants provide valuable contributions to undergraduate teaching at Nipissing University while also giving the opportunity to share their knowledge in their area of expertise. Being a Graduate Teaching Assistant offers students meaningful professional development and work experience in teaching, facilitation, supervision, and evaluation. GTA positions are for a maximum of 10 hours per week and are available to full-time graduate students within their time to completion window.

The Indigenous Mentorship Network of Ontario (IMN-O) provides financial support for Indigenous graduate students pursuing research in applied community-based Indigenous health and well-being. Graduate Student Travel Funding

Nipissing University's School of Graduate Studies provides financial support to eligible graduate students who will be actively presenting their research at an academic conference. The funding is available to Masters and Doctoral level students in good academic standing who are registered in their program at the time of the conference. Students must be presenting a paper or poster at the conference to be eligible. Applications are reviewed by the School of Graduate Studies' Awards & Funding Committee and ranked according to distance travelled, cost of the conference, funds available from other sources, evidence of seeking other funds to support travel costs, and the value of the conference presentation to the student. Student Support Fund

The Student Support Fund at Nipissing University provides students with urgent financial assistance to help cover immediate, essential expenses because of an emergency. The fund recognizes that personal finances should not be a limiting factor for students and addresses unexpected life challenges that create barriers for students to continue their studies. Eligible expenses include addressing housing insecurity due to emergencies, exceptional life circumstances such as illness in family, fire, or flooding, family crisis, emergency drug prescriptions, emergency dentistry, and emergency eyewear. The fund is issued in the form of a personal cheque and students are normally permitted financial support through the Student Support Fund once during their academic career at Nipissing University.
