About this opportunity
This is a PhD studentship involving a collaborative doctoral partnership between Imperial College London and the National Gallery, focused on developing Machine-Learning-based registration and resolution enhancement workflows for imaging data from artworks. The project involves using complementary imaging techniques to further understanding of artworks, including visible images, infrared reflectograms, X-radiographs, and images from spectroscopic imaging techniques such as macro X-ray fluorescence scanning (MA-XRF) and reflectance imaging spectroscopy (RIS). The research aims to address image processing challenges posed by multimodal datasets containing information about Old Master paintings. This exciting interdisciplinary project involves close collaboration between engineers with expertise in machine learning and image processing, heritage scientists, conservators and curators. The student will be based at Imperial College London's Electrical and Electronic Engineering Department with concentrated periods of time at the National Gallery's Scientific Department, jointly supervised by Professor Pier Luigi Dragotti and Dr Catherine Higgitt.
