About This Opportunity

The Dr. Courtney W. Shropshire Scholarship Program was established by the Civitan International Foundation in 1965 to honor Dr. Courtney W. Shropshire, the founder and first President of Civitan International. Each year, the interest earned from the Shropshire Scholarship fund is used to provide awards to eligible Civitan members. The program includes scholarship levels with the highest possible award being $5,000. Qualifying applicants are awarded a dollar amount based on the natural break in scores, with Civitan International accepting as many applicants as their budget allows. Shropshire Scholarships are only to be used for school-billed expenses and are paid directly to the institution of the recipient's choice. The scholarships can be redeemed immediately but expire in December after the year they are awarded. Any Civitan, Campus Civitan, or Junior Civitan who has been a member for 2 years and is enrolled or planning to enroll in a degree or certificate program at an accredited community college, vocational school, four-year college, or graduate school is eligible to apply. Candidates are judged on four criteria: Civitan Involvement (40 points), Personal Statement Essay (30 points), Academic Goals & Achievements (20 points), and Community/School Activities (10 points). The scholarship selection committee begins reviewing applications in March with results typically sent out in April. The scholarship fund is currently supported by the Civitan International Fellows Programs and direct contributions.
