About This Opportunity

The Pearson Medal is an annual award established by the friends, past pupils and admirers of Charles Yelverton Pearson, MD, MCh, FRCS, formerly Professor of Surgery at University College Cork. The medal, which may be supplemented by a book prize, is awarded to the candidate who has obtained the highest marks in Surgery (module CP5100) at the Final Medical Examination. This prestigious award recognizes excellence in surgical studies and is part of UCC's long tradition of honoring outstanding medical students. To be eligible for the award, candidates must achieve a sufficiently high standard as determined by the Academic Council and must have been a student at University College Cork for the three years immediately preceding the examinations. The award is specifically designed to recognize students who have demonstrated exceptional performance in their surgical studies during their medical degree program at UCC. The medal is funded from an endowment made by donors to the University for awards to be made in perpetuity. The funds are invested, and the annual income determines the amount available for the award each year. Due to fluctuations in the investment market, the value may vary from year to year.
