About this opportunity
The W.R. "Bill" Asplund Scholarship honors a beloved Wenatchee High School science teacher who served from 1963 through 1987. Bill Asplund was a mentor to many students, instilling appreciation for chemistry, scientific curiosity, and the natural world. He also introduced students to the outdoors as an advisor to the WHS Alpine Club and later as an outdoor sports retailer. Having experienced homelessness as a child, Asplund developed a life-long appreciation for those who helped him become a teacher and remained an advocate for wilderness conservation.
This scholarship supports graduates or graduating seniors from Wenatchee High School or Westside High School who are pursuing STEM education. Preference is given to first-generation college students, those from disadvantaged backgrounds, students currently or previously in foster care, and those with special aptitude or interest in science, technology, engineering, math, or environmental studies. The funds are dispersed once the student has been accepted into their college major in a STEM field, typically in their junior year of college.
The scholarship reflects Asplund's dedication to supporting students who face challenges similar to those he overcame, while encouraging the pursuit of scientific knowledge and environmental stewardship. Through this award, his legacy of mentorship and advocacy continues to benefit students in the Wenatchee Valley area.
